In an interview on CNN Thursday, Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio claimed that his loss in the 2024 Senate race to businessman Bernie Moreno was the result of Republicans “rigging the system” through targeted political advertising and changes to voting laws. Brown, who had served three terms in the Senate, expressed frustration over the tactics used by his Republican opponents, suggesting that they distorted key issues to sway voters and undermine the fairness of the election.
Brown, who was defeated by Moreno with 50.2% of the vote to Brown’s 46.6%, pointed to the significant influence of Republican-funded advertisements, which he claimed focused heavily on divisive social issues, particularly transgender rights. One ad in particular, which featured Vice President Kamala Harris, discussed her role as California’s attorney general in advocating for transgender prisoners to receive gender-affirming surgeries. Brown argued that these ads misrepresented the issues at hand and were designed to stoke fear rather than offer meaningful discourse on how to improve Ohio’s future.
“They lie about it and they put — in this case, they — they spent $40 million on 8 different ads on that issue,” Brown said. “They weren’t talking about how to make Ohio a better state. They’re not doing their job on education. They’re not doing their job on health care. They’re not doing their job on creating jobs.”
Some readers may find themselves perplexed by Brown’s framing of the issues, as the Biden administration’s jobs numbers have been consistently underwhelming, with his White House taking credit for jobs lost during COVID and reintroduced after restrictions were lifted, as well as creating a staggering amount of government positions.
Republicans also had no need to lie about Kamala Harris’s previously stated positions on transgenderism, as one of the most successful ads they ran featured her explaining her beliefs and actions in her own words.
CNN reporter Manu Raju challenged Brown’s assertions, pointing out that the Republican campaign’s strategy had been successful, as Moreno won the election. In response, Brown doubled down on his claim that Republicans had manipulated the system to tip the scales in their favor, especially through measures that made voting more difficult for Ohioans.
“Yeah, but they’re winning elections in part because they — they’ve rigged the system,” Brown fired back. “They’ve made it harder to vote. They’ve changed ballot language in a draconian, in a dramatic way with the last election. They did that with abortion rights. It didn’t work in that case.”
Brown’s comments referenced recent changes to Ohio’s election laws, which he argues have made it more difficult for voters—particularly in urban areas and communities of color—to cast ballots. The major changes to Ohio’s election laws included requiring photo ID and tightening vote by mail deadlines.
Referring to transgenderism, Brown said, “I’m not out of touch on those issues,” Brown responded firmly. “I go home, I hear people all the time. I know how they focus group and they lie. I mean, how do you call me out of touch when they lie about an issue?”
Despite Brown’s assertions, political analysts have pointed out that many Democrats, including President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, have struggled to connect with voters in key swing states like Ohio. The state, which has traditionally been a bellwether for presidential elections, has become increasingly conservative in recent years, with Donald Trump winning Ohio by a significant margin in 2020.
Brown’s defeat, alongside the loss of other high-profile Democratic incumbents, highlights the challenges facing the Democratic Party as it contends with shifting voter attitudes and the impact of national issues on local elections.

Sure the GOP cheated by NOT letting him count votes that were tainted like they usually do when no one is watching them in elections. It is tiring watching cheaters to prevent them from cheating. So this guy is right he did not get to count the illegal votes. Oh Well, so sad! NOT!!
No, you lost because you are a communist JERK OFF!
As always, accusing Republicans of what they do. 🤦♀️
If this dude could hear how stupid that comment sounds,he would shut up.Democrats always blame others for what they do and have done for years/Something is wrong mentally with these swine
Truly priceless given the lawfare of people like Bragg, Willis, and the behind the scenes stuff done by Marc Elias coupled with drop box shenanigans, disappearing ballots, and suspiciously similar ballots arriving in the suitcases in the middle of the night in 2020 and on and on. Great attempt at bravado but totally not credible. As folks have long said, “ the Dems accuse the Republicans of the things they are doing.” Now you can be “an election denier” like you have accused Republicans of ding for the last four years. Enjoy!
No Sherrod, we didn’t have to cheat, we had God on our side. We were totally feed up with the way you voted. I know I’m right because I live in Marion & our city has turned almost all red. It is a much saver place to be. So just go away & cry.
How unsporting of the Republicans to point out Brown’s actual positions on these issues and also to insist that people who vote are legal voters.
Brown is a liar and a sore loser. Ohio is a better place with him gone,
What it boils down to is that if Democrats win an election it is free and fair but if they lose then it is rigged. So what happened to the 12 million votes Biden got in 2020 but seem to have completely disappeared in the 2024 election? Two possibilities:
1. Harris was considered so horrible by Democrat voters that 12 million of them decided not to vote.
2. They never actually existed in 2020.
What a sore loser he is. Move out of Ohio and take your crazy liberal/socialist ideas with you.
Liberal tears make the best tea.
tsk. tsk….these election deniers. lol.
