FEC Launches Investigation into Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s ActBlue Donations Amid Fraud Concerns

The Federal Election Commission (FEC) has opened a formal investigation into Texas Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s 2024 campaign following allegations of potentially fraudulent donations made through the popular Democratic fundraising platform ActBlue.

The inquiry was prompted by a March 26 complaint filed by the conservative Coolidge-Reagan Foundation, which raised red flags about a series of donations reportedly made in the name of a 73-year-old Texas resident. The FEC notified the Foundation on April 2 that it would proceed with a review and inform Rep. Crockett of the complaint.

At the heart of the issue is an alleged pattern of small-dollar donations made through ActBlue to Crockett’s campaign. According to the complaint, a man named Randy Best is listed as having made 53 donations totaling $595. However, in a video promoted by one of Crockett’s prospective opponents, Best’s wife denies any knowledge of the contributions, raising questions about whether the donations were made with the consent or awareness of the individual named.

The broader concern cited in the complaint is the $870,000 Crockett’s campaign has received through ActBlue. The Coolidge-Reagan Foundation argues that if one donation was potentially fraudulent, others could be as well. “It is unclear how many of these are similarly fraudulent transactions,” the complaint states, calling into question the integrity of the ActBlue platform.

ActBlue, a key Democratic fundraising tool, has been under scrutiny in recent months. Some Republicans allege the platform may facilitate unauthorized or misattributed donations, particularly from elderly Americans unaware that their names are being used.

While Rep. Crockett’s campaign has not issued a response, the next procedural step allows her 15 days to formally reply to the allegations. Extensions of 30 to 60 days are common in such cases. Neither Crockett’s congressional office, her campaign, nor ActBlue have responded to inquiries from The Daily Signal, which first reported the investigation.

Legal experts say the campaign could try to shift blame to ActBlue, arguing that donations were processed independently of direct solicitation. However, Dan Backer, the attorney for the Coolidge-Reagan Foundation, believes that defense would not hold up. “The problem is legally, the campaign committee treasurer is responsible for due diligence,” Backer said. “ActBlue has been under investigation by state and federal authorities. That excuse might have worked a year ago.”

ActBlue has maintained that its operations comply with federal law and that the investigations are politically motivated. The FEC, adhering to its policies on open cases, declined to comment.

As scrutiny around digital fundraising platforms intensifies, this case may set an important precedent for how much responsibility campaigns bear for the accuracy and legitimacy of the donations they receive through third-party platforms.

The investigation adds another layer of political pressure for Crockett, a rising Democratic figure who has become known for her dramatic presence on Capitol Hill and in media appearances. It also raises broader questions about transparency and accountability in the era of small-dollar, internet-driven campaign financing.

Journalist James O’Keefe of the O’Keefe Media Group conducted his own investigation into the platform. O’Keefe interviewed dozens of Americans—many of them retirees on fixed incomes—who were shocked to discover that their names had been used to log donations to Democrat candidates in ActBlue’s system, despite never having made such contributions. In some cases, these individuals were shown as having donated tens of thousands of dollars over time, often in small, frequent increments. The findings fueled suspicions that ActBlue may be facilitating or failing to prevent fraudulent contributions made in the names of unsuspecting citizens.

The mounting scrutiny of ActBlue intensified following a damning report revealing turmoil within the organization. At least seven senior officials have recently resigned, including high-ranking figures such as the associate general counsel and chief revenue officer, raising serious questions about the platform’s stability and leadership. The revelations were compounded by explosive whistleblower claims from Zain Ahmad, ActBlue’s last remaining in-house attorney as of late February, who accused the organization of retaliation—including revoking his internal access and deleting communications on Slack. In a letter to the company, Ahmad cited ActBlue’s own anti-retaliation and whistleblower policies, signaling potential legal implications. Two employee unions representing ActBlue staff called Ahmad’s claims “unsettling and disturbing” and warned of a “growing pattern of volatility and toxicity.” In a formal appeal to the board, the unions demanded an independent investigation into the organization’s leadership, especially its CEO, citing a breakdown in trust and mounting internal instability. With Republicans in Congress already investigating ActBlue’s security measures—particularly its handling of potential foreign donations—the platform’s internal disarray threatens to undercut its crucial role in Democratic fundraising ahead of the 2026 and 2028 election cycles.
