The Giffords gun control group founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle “Gabby” Giffords has announced it will spend $15 million this fall to help elect presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Kamala Harris and Democrats in key “battleground states,” according to a report at Fox News.
Report: Giffords To Spend $15M To Elect Harris, Dems In ‘Battleground States’
The report says Giffords will spend money in states such as Arizona and Michigan to help elect Harris, and in “swing” districts in California and New York to elect Democrats to the U.S. House of Representatives.
The revelation comes less than 100 days before the November election.
In a press release, Giffords endorsed Harris, declaring, “I can think of no better candidate to beat Donald Trump and protect our democracy.”
By no coincidence, Giffords is the wife of Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, who is reportedly on the short list to be Harris’ running mate.
The claim that Trump will destroy democracy if he is re-elected has been put forth by Democrats up and down the ballot. Even President Joe Biden has made the allegation in a message posted to “X” (formerly Twitter) in recent days. It does not explain the allegation, nor does it recall that Trump did not “destroy democracy” when he was in office from 2017 to 2021.
Still, Biden claims, “Donald Trump is a genuine threat to this nation. He’s a threat to our freedom. He’s a threat to our democracy. He’s literally a threat to everything America stands for.”
According to Fox, Giffords did some internal polling in June and “found 70% of American voters in battleground districts are “extremely” or “very” concerned about gun violence.” The issue is apparently critical among Latino and Black Americans.
However, Fox did its own survey and found the gun issue “extremely important” among 45 percent of Americans. Guns rank 7th on a list of 10 extremely important issues.
In addition, a separate Fox report refers to a story in MSNBC showing a panel of Black voters who claim “they each personally know of at least one Black man that is committed to voting for former President Trump over Kamala Harris in November.”
Big money spending is nothing new in presidential politics. Neither are independent expenditures. The more money being spent shows how important the results of the race are to the people putting up the cash.
