Georgia Election Official Confirms Senate Runoff

-

As Americans continue to wait for election results to trickle in, a Georgia elections official said Wednesday morning that it's safe to assume the will head to a runoff election.

“While county officials are still doing the detailed work on counting the votes, we feel it is safe to say there will be a runoff for the US Senate here in Georgia slated for December 6,” Gabriel Sterling, the Georgia secretary of state's chief operating officer, said on Twitter.

Shortly before noon, Sterling provided another update, saying that the runoff election between Raphael Warnock and Herschel Walker will occur on Dec. 6.

incumbent Democrat Sen. Raphael Warnock held a razor-thin lead over Republican challenger Herschel Walker with about 98% of the vote counted as of Wednesday morning.

However, neither candidate breached the 50% threshold needed to avoid a runoff in the Peach State.

Libertarian candidate Chase Oliver has thrown a wrench into the race by holding about 2% of the vote, enough to successfully chip away at the two candidates' chances of securing 50% of the vote.

A runoff race will last four weeks rather than nine, as a result of Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp‘s (R) 2020 election overhaul bill that was signed into law in 2021.

Governor Kemp won a second term Tuesday night, defeating Democrat challenger Stacey Abrams a second time. Unlike her 2018 loss, Abrams conceded her loss in a speech Tuesday evening. (RELATED: Stacey Abrams Prepares to Challenge Another Election)

“Tonight, I am doing clearly what is the responsible thing, I am suspending my campaign for governor,” she said, according to The Hill. “I may no longer be seeking the office of governor, but I will never stop doing everything in my power to make sure the people in Georgia have a voice.”

“While I may have not crossed the finish line, that doesn't mean that I won't stop running for a better Georgia,” she said. “Even though my fight — our fight — for the governor's mansion came up short, I'm pretty tall.”

  1. I hope Walker can pull off a win. We need to get behind him. Has there been any suggestions of election fraud as evidenced in 2020? I have not heard of any besides Dominion voting machines denying voters their right to vote and some isolated incidents by election officials. Like France, the US. needs to return to paper ballots only, and restrict absentee ballots to only people who can justify them due to disability or business outside the country. People convicted of voter fraud need to spend significant jail time.
