President Trump selected the former judge and Fox News host amid controversy over Martin’s failed confirmation…
Veteran Prosecutor Returns to Government
President Donald Trump has appointed Jeanine Pirro as the interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, stepping in after the administration pulled Ed Martin’s nomination due to a lack of Senate support.
Pirro, 73, is best known today for her role as a Fox News host, but her legal résumé stretches back decades.
Pirro, 73, brings a wealth of legal experience to the role. She previously served as Westchester County’s assistant district attorney, county judge and district attorney, becoming the first woman elected to each of those positions in New York . During her tenure, she established the nation’s first Domestic Violence Bureau, showcasing her commitment to victims’ rights.
In his announcement, Trump praised Pirro as “incredibly well qualified” and “in a class by herself,” emphasizing her history as a “powerful crusader for victims of crime.”
Why Martin’s Nomination Fell Apart
Ed Martin’s nomination was withdrawn on Thursday after it became clear he lacked the votes to advance. Opposition came from both sides of the aisle, driven by his controversial actions as interim U.S. attorney — including the demotion of prosecutors handling Jan. 6 cases, a move that alienated several Republican senators. Critics also pointed to what they described as politically motivated investigations targeting Elon Musk’s opponents, further fueling resistance.
During Martin’s nomination process, North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis emerged as the key Republican voice opposing his confirmation.
A member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Tillis cited Martin’s defense of Jan. 6 rioters and support for blanket pardons as major concerns. He emphasized that anyone who breached the Capitol on that day should face legal consequences, stating: “I have no tolerance for anybody who entered the building on January the 6th.”
Senator Susan Collins of Maine also voiced concern over Martin’s affiliations — particularly his past support for Timothy Hale-Cusanelli, a January 6 rioter with alleged Nazi sympathies. However, her opposition was less vocal than that of Tillis, whose definitive stance played a more pivotal role in the nomination’s collapse.
Tillis’s opposition, coupled with broader concerns about Martin’s lack of prosecutorial experience, ultimately led to the withdrawal of the nomination on Thursday.
Media to Government Pipeline Continues
Pirro’s appointment continues a familiar pattern of former President Donald Trump tapping longtime Fox News personalities for key government roles — following previous picks like Pete Hegseth and Sean Duffy.
While Pirro’s position is interim for now, a formal Senate confirmation will be required to make her appointment permanent.
