Kari Lake, a prominent Republican figure and staunch ally of President-elect Donald Trump, is a leading contender to be named the next U.S. ambassador to Mexico, two individuals familiar with the discussions tell Semafor.
Lake first rose to national prominence during her 2022 campaign for governor of Arizona. Although she narrowly lost to Democrat Katie Hobbs by approximately 17,000 votes, Lake refused to concede and pursued multiple legal challenges, all of which were ultimately unsuccessful.
In 2023, Lake shifted her focus to the U.S. Senate, announcing her candidacy for Arizona’s seat and clinching the Republican nomination in July 2024. However, her November 2024 general election bid fell short against Democratic Congressman Ruben Gallego. Gallego won with 50.06% of the vote, compared to Lake’s 47.65%, marking her second consecutive defeat in high-profile statewide races.
Despite these setbacks, Lake maintained her influence within Republican circles, particularly on immigration policy—a key issue in her Senate campaign. She unveiled a 10 Point Plan to Secure the Border, which emphasized completing construction of the border wall, expanding surveillance technology and enforcing stricter immigration and asylum policies. Lake also held high-profile press conferences at the Arizona-Mexico border, where she criticized federal immigration policies and underscored the local impact of illegal immigration on resources and housing costs:
A staunch Trump ally, Lake has remained close to the president-elect over the last few years, backing his unproven claims that the 2020 election was stolen. During her most recent run for office, Lake sought to moderate some of her positions, particularly on the topic of abortion.
She also made efforts to mend fences with some establishment Republicans whom she had sparred with in the past.
Lake has echoed Trump in backing strict limits on immigration. On the campaign trail, Lake described the influx of migrants entering the US as an “invasion.”
She campaigned on finishing the wall at the US southern border, increasing the number of judges who hear asylum claims, stepping up quick deportations of undocumented immigrants who cross outside official ports of entry and building additional border detention facilities.
If selected as ambassador, Lake would take on a challenging portfolio, engaging with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration on critical issues such as migration, counternarcotics efforts and trade. Her appointment would also coincide with Trump’s promise to impose new tariffs on imports if Mexico does not curb the flow of illegal immigrants and narcotics like fentanyl.
Lake’s deep focus on border security and her vocal critiques of current immigration policies suggest she would bring a hardline approach to the role, reflecting Trump’s broader agenda for U.S.-Mexico relations.

I STILL SAY, GET ABOUT 1,000 ALLIGATORS AND DUMP THEM IN THE RIVER!!! THE BORDER THAT DON’T HAVE A RIVER AS THEIR BORDER, BUILD A LONG MOAT/CANEL AND PUT ANOTHER 1,000 ALLEGATORS IN IT. ADD ANOTHER 15 FEET IN HEIGHT TO THE BORDER WALL WITH ELECTRICAL WIRE AT THE TOP AND OUR SIDE OF THE WALL!!! THIS WOULD BE A START! THOSE THAT DO MAKE IT ACROSS, BUILD LARGE CATAPULTS TO FLY THEM BACK OVER THE INTO MEXICO!!!
Kari Lake did NOT lose her run for Arizona Governor to Hobbs in 2022; that election, as so many others in this country was STOLEN.
I sincerely hope she becomes a part of Trump’s team
I’m sure she legitimately lost.
