Maine Senate Candidate Graham Platner Under Fire After Wife Flags Sexually Explicit Messages

Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner is facing a fresh round of scrutiny after reports revealed that his wife alerted campaign officials last year that she had discovered sexually explicit text messages he had sent to other women during their marriage.

The allegations, first reported by The Wall Street Journal and confirmed by multiple outlets, add to a growing list of controversies that have complicated Platner’s bid to unseat Sen. Susan Collins in one of the most closely watched Senate races of 2026.

Wife disclosed texts during campaign vetting

According to the Journal, Platner’s wife, Amy Gertner, informed campaign aides in August 2025 that she had discovered sexually explicit messages on her husband’s phone earlier that year. The disclosure reportedly occurred during an internal opposition-research effort as campaign staff sought to identify vulnerabilities before Republicans could exploit them.

Campaign aides ultimately concluded the matter was a private marital issue rather than a political liability because the couple was already undergoing counseling and attempting to repair their relationship.

Gertner has since publicly defended her husband and expressed anger that details she shared privately with campaign officials became public.

“I confided deeply personal details about my marriage to someone I considered a friend,” Gertner said in a statement released through the campaign. She added that she and Platner went through counseling and emerged with a stronger marriage.

“I know who Graham is. I know the man I married and the husband he has been to me on the best and the worst days of my life. That hasn’t changed, and it won’t.”

Former campaign aide raises concerns

The controversy resurfaced after former campaign political director Genevieve McDonald discussed the matter with reporters.

McDonald, who left the campaign last year amid disputes over other controversies involving Platner, argued that the Senate candidate’s personal conduct raises broader questions about judgment and character.

“The United States Senate is not a training ground for redemption,” McDonald told reporters. “It is a place for proven leaders with moral clarity and integrity.”

McDonald was among several campaign officials who departed after revelations about Platner’s past online activity and a tattoo associated with the Nazi-era Totenkopf symbol became public.

Latest controversy in turbulent campaign

The sexting allegations arrive after months of damaging stories about Platner’s past.

The former Marine and oyster farmer has already faced criticism over deleted Reddit posts containing racist, sexist, and homophobic comments, as well as remarks minimizing sexual assault and defending infidelity. Platner has apologized for many of the posts, attributing them to immaturity, military culture, and trauma stemming from his combat deployments.

His campaign also spent months responding to questions about a Totenkopf tattoo on his chest, a symbol widely associated with Nazi Germany’s SS units. Platner has maintained that he received the tattoo while serving overseas without understanding its historical significance and later covered it after learning its meaning.

More recently, reports surfaced linking Platner to an active account on the messaging app Kik, a platform often associated with anonymous messaging and sexting. Images tied to the account appeared to show a shirtless man with tattoos resembling Platner’s. The campaign has not publicly disputed the existence of the account.

High-stakes race for Democrats

The controversy comes at a sensitive moment for Democrats, who view Maine as one of their best opportunities to flip a Republican-held Senate seat.

Platner became the party’s presumptive nominee after Gov. Janet Mills suspended her Senate campaign, clearing the path for the progressive candidate backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Despite the steady stream of controversies, Platner remains a formidable challenger in a state where Collins has historically outperformed national Republicans but faces a difficult political environment. Recent polling has shown Platner leading Collins, though Republican groups have increasingly focused their attacks on Platner’s personal history rather than policy differences.

For now, there are no allegations of criminal wrongdoing. But the latest revelations ensure that questions about Platner’s personal conduct and judgment will continue to shadow his campaign as Democrats attempt to make one of the nation’s most important Senate races a referendum on Collins and control of the chamber.

Why do people vote these scum bags to rule over our highest offices?

    An American

Just what this country needs … another pervert running for political office. 😠
With all of his heavy baggage, it would seem that he’d want to cower in a hole and not let anyone else see what trash is in his past.
And just because he was in the Marine Corp does not mean that he’s some kind of patriot.
When I was in the Corp, I saw some people who I considered rather ‘wacked out’.
All too many were in just for the ability to say that they were Marines.
It’s NOT whether they were in the Corp, but what kind of person that they were when they were ‘in’.
