Pence joins a growing field of candidates but enters the race with some of the strongest name recognition of any Republican candidate.

Governor Ron DeSantis and South Carolina Senator Tim Scott most recently launched their respective campaign for the White House. Former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley announced her campaign earlier this year, along with tech mogul Vivek Ramaswamy and former President Donald Trump. Former Arkansas Governor and staunch Trump critic Asa Hutchinson joined the race earlier this spring, followed by conservative commentator Larry Elder.

New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu is also expected to enter the race.

A CNN poll released in late May found Pence was the first choice of 6 percent of Republican and Republican-leaning primary voters, trailing Trump, who was the first choice of 53 percent of voters, and DeSantis, who was the first choice of 26 percent.
