As the 2024 election cycle heats up, New Hampshire has emerged as a battleground state that may no longer be out of reach for Donald Trump. Recent developments indicate that economic concerns among voters are reshaping the political landscape, while Vice President Kamala Harris struggles to establish herself as a trustworthy candidate on the matter.
The Daily Caller reports:
A new Emerson College Polling/WHDH poll, conducted Oct. 21-23, shows Harris with a narrow lead of just three points over Trump, garnering support from 50% of likely voters compared to Trump’s 47%. Third-party candidates pull 2%, with 1% of voters still undecided.
This slim margin signals a more competitive race than many anticipated in the Democratic-leaning state as Trump gains momentum in a state that President Joe Biden carried by over 7% in 2020. Recent polling shows a noticeable shift among male voters in favor of Trump, while Harris maintains a lead among women similar to Biden’s in the last election.
Earlier in the cycle, it was revealed that the Trump campaign had abandoned hope in the state via internal memos. However, as inflation continues to impact voters and economic uncertainties loom, voters have growing doubts about Harris’s ability to turn the economy around, as she hasn’t been able to successfully differentiate herself from Biden. This shift in sentiment is creating an opportunity for Trump to resonate with constituents the GOP hasn’t been able to reach in over 20 years.
Harris’s inability to convince voters of her economic competency is her greatest obstacle on her path to 270. Despite her attempts to present a vision of economic stability and growth, many voters remain skeptical. The initial economic plan she revealed included Soviet era price controls on grocery stores and home loans for first-time buyers that left many voters unconvinced. Shortly after revealing her economic plan, she began walking it back, raising even more red flags for voters. Polls suggest that her message is not landing as intended. This skepticism is fueled by her continued flip-flopping on key issues and inability to explain her changes in position.
Trump, on the other hand, is leveraging this environment to reinforce his message on economic recovery and fiscal responsibility. He has positioned himself as a candidate who understands the struggles of everyday Americans and is prepared to implement policies that prioritize economic growth and job creation. While many voters express concerns about Trump, the majority of them report feeling like they were better off financially during his presidency, and prioritize that over all other issues.
The contrast between Trump’s approach and Harris’s struggling narrative underscores a massive vulnerability for the Democrats as a whole. Over the years, the Democrats have put a large amount of emphasis on social and identity issues that are no longer resonating with the majority of Americans. As Harris struggles to establish herself as a candidate that can be trusted to lead the United States into economic recovery, once solid Democratic voters are increasingly considering Trump.
For Trump, New Hampshire represents a crucial opportunity to expand his base and win a historic victory.
