Belleville, N.J. — Earlier this month, radioactive material went missing in New Jersey, as announced by Belleville Mayor Michael Melham during a recent television interview.
Melham said during a Tuesday morning appearance on Good Day New York that the situation is tied to a missing shipment processed through the Port Newark–Elizabeth Marine Terminal, one of the largest container facilities in the United States and the principal hub for goods moving in and out of the New York metropolitan area.
“We’re aware of a threat that came in through Port Newark. Maybe that’s radioactive material,” Melham stated.
The mayor added that an alert was issued following the Dec. 2 incident involving the missing radioactive shipment. Melham speculated that recent drone sightings across New Jersey could be connected to the ongoing search for the material.
“We know we have drones flying in a grid-like pattern. In my opinion, they’re looking for something. What might they be looking for? Maybe that’s radioactive material,” Melham said on the popular morning news program.

According to a Nuclear Regulatory Commission alert, radioactive material went missing on Dec. 2.
The NRC has confirmed that radioactive material was lost in transit while en route to a New Jersey cancer treatment center on that date. The material, a Ge-68 pin source used in medical imaging, reportedly arrived at its destination in an empty, damaged container.
“There is an alert that’s out right now that radioactive material in New Jersey has gone missing on Dec. 2. It was a shipment,” Melham added.
Officials, however, have classified the event as “Less than Category 3,” indicating it is unlikely to pose significant harm to individuals.
Still, Melham and others continue to doubt that designation and question the official narrative that the drones belong to local enthusiasts and small town law enforcement agencies.
“Information has not been forthcoming, and it’s this lack of transparency…that’s doing nothing but fueling conspiracy theories online,” he argued.
When asked about his thoughts on what the drones could be, Melham responded, “I can tell you what it’s not.”
“We know for a fact it’s not little green men.” He added, Melham said the drones were flying in a grid and that they could likely be looking for something.
“Maybe that’s radioactive material,” Melham said.
“And more than likely, it’s not a foreign adversary, because they would be able to figure out how to turn off the blinking lights,” he said.
