The infighting between House Republicans is just heating up…
As House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) defends his position from hardline conservatives led by Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz it seems some House Republicans are taking measures into their own hands. Recent reports indicate some members are preparing to file a motion to expel Rep. Gaetz from Congress pending the result of an ongoing Ethics investigation.
American Liberty News reported over the summer that investigators are currently “focused on allegations that he may have engaged in sexual misconduct, illicit drug use or other misconduct.”
Fox News reported on Sunday that House Republican members “will seek to expel Gaetz if the ethics committee report comes back with findings of guilt.”
“No one can stand him at this point,” one member told Fox News. “A smart guy without morals.”
Gaetz took the brunt of criticism last week over his handling of a short-term funding bill that would have kept the U.S. government open and included “a spending reduction, money for border security, and a commission on the growing federal debt,” The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board noted.
However, Gaetz and a small faction of hardline conservatives ultimately rejected the package forcing Republicans to cut a deal with Democrats to keep the government open.
“The only way he can be successful is if he has 200 plus Democrats,” Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (R-MO) said during an interview on Sunday. “Basically, Gaetz is going to work with Nancy Pelosi, Hakeem Jeffries, and the rest of the Democrats in order to remove the Republican speaker… If you remove a Republican speaker, that then puts the Democrats in power, these investigations will be done and stalled. That is unacceptable of Matt Gaetz.”
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has also sounded off on the ongoing drama surrounding the Florida lawmaker.
Gingrich posted on X: “Is Gaetz secretly an agent for the Democratic Party? No one else is doing as much to undermine, weaken and cripple the House GOP.”
On Sunday, Gingrich said fully expelling Gaetz from the lower chamber could be a “step too Far” but appeared open to the idea of booting Gaetz from the House GOP conference and his committee assignments as a more “rational response.”
“The effort to expel Matt Gaetz for being a destructive, irresponsible anti-Republican may be a step too far,” Gingrich wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Expulsion from the House requires a two thirds vote.”
“However expelling him from the House Republican Conference and eliminating all his committee assignments and all resources other than those an individual member is entitled to would be a rational response to his suicidal efforts to cripple the House GOP,” Gingrich continued.
According to the House Republican Conference rules set for the 118th Congress, it takes a two-thirds vote to expel a GOP member from the conference.
To remove a member from a standing committee, the House is required to vote on a resolution for removal.
