Louisiana state Rep. Julie Emerson (R) announced Thursday that she is ending her primary challenge against Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), citing the recent entry of Trump-backed Rep. Julia Letlow (R-La.) into the race.
“With Congresswoman Letlow’s entrance into the race, the path to victory that was viable a couple of months ago has diminished,” Emerson said in a statement posted on the social platform X. “I support President Trump and respect his decision to endorse Julia Letlow to defeat Bill Cassidy.”
Letlow, who represents Louisiana’s 5th Congressional District and has served in the House since 2021, officially launched her campaign Tuesday to challenge Cassidy. President Trump endorsed Letlow before her announcement, signaling early support for a challenger aiming to unseat Cassidy in the GOP primary.
I’m honored to have President Trump’s endorsement and trust. My mission is clear: to ensure the nation our children inherit is safer and stronger. ⁰

This United States Senate seat belongs to the people of Louisiana, because we deserve conservative leadership that will not waver. pic.twitter.com/851hQkXhIN
Letlow, who has represented Louisiana’s 5th Congressional District since 2021, rose to national attention after winning a special election following the death of her husband, Rep. Luke Letlow, who died from complications related to COVID-19 shortly after being elected.
Emerson’s exit is expected to consolidate support behind Letlow, who is positioning herself as the more conservative alternative to Cassidy. Cassidy has faced ongoing backlash from Trump and many Republican voters since he voted in 2021 to convict Trump during the Senate impeachment trial following the Jan. 6 Capitol attack.
With Trump’s endorsement already in place, Letlow’s entrance could also increase pressure on other Republican candidates considering bids against Cassidy to step aside.
Still, the intraparty battle lines are not fully aligned. Senate Republican leadership has said it will continue backing Cassidy, creating a split between establishment GOP leaders and Trump’s preferred candidate as the race begins to take shape.
The race will also unfold under Louisiana’s new closed primary process, a change that could have major consequences. With a more Republican-only electorate participating, Cassidy may face an even more conservative and Trump-friendly primary environment than in previous cycles.

This site needs to stop calling Trump “former president” when he is the current president. This is not the first time this has occurred. This is either sloppy journalism or some one who doesn not believe he is our president!
I don’t know about this race, but republicans need to stop automatically supporting every Trump candidate, because most of his endorsements are RINO’s. He’s had 10 years as king of the Republican Party and is responsible for most of the moderate Republicans we have in congress. Most of the congressmen who cross the aisle to join Democrats in blocking good legislation, are people has endorsed.
