Donald Trump has removed two candidates from his running mate shortlist: Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum.
According to multiple sources, Rubio and Burgum were informed earlier on Monday afternoon that they would not be Trump’s nominee for vice president. A Trump campaign source told Fox News that a decision has been made.
The most likely pick is Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, the supposed favorite after a local Fox affiliate caught him leaving his Cincinnati home with an unusually heavy police escort.
FOX8 reported increased security around the Vance residence, coordinated by Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, the ATF and the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The Hill reports on the growing certainty about Trump’s decision:
Sources had for weeks said Vance, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum were the finalists for the job. But Rubio and Burgum were both told Monday they were not the pick.
Trump is expected to announce his running mate for the 2024 presidential election later this evening, at the beginning of the Republican National Convention.
While Vance is the notable frontrunner to be Trump’s running mate, other dark horse contenders include:
- Kristi Noem: Governor of South Dakota, known for her strong conservative stance and popularity within the GOP.
- Mike Pompeo: Former Secretary of State, with extensive experience in international affairs and national security.
- Tulsi Gabbard: Former Democratic congresswoman from Hawaii, though her selection would be unconventional given her previous affiliation.
