During the 47th annual Kennedy Center Honors, the Bidens seemingly ignored Harris, even as she stood and applauded enthusiastically for them. The awkward interaction, captured on video, quickly gained traction online, leading some to question the relationship between the president and his vice president.
At Sunday night’s prestigious event in Washington D.C., the Bidens arrived to a standing ovation, as is customary for sitting presidents at such high-profile functions. However, as they made their way into the venue, they appeared to deliberately avoid acknowledging Harris, who stood just a few feet away, cheering them on. The vice president, smiling and clapping, was seemingly disregarded by both Joe and Jill Biden, who failed to make eye contact or offer a greeting.
The moment was captured on video and quickly went viral. The footage circulated widely on X (formerly Twitter), with the account End Wokeness sharing the clip, which garnered more than 780,000 views by early Monday morning. Social media users were quick to point out the icy nature of the exchange, with many speculating that the awkwardness was a sign of deeper tension within the administration.
This isn’t the first time the Bidens have appeared to publicly snub Kamala Harris. Tensions between President Biden and his vice president have been a topic of conversation for some time, particularly in the wake of the 2024 election. There have been multiple reports over the past year about the strained dynamic between Biden and Harris.
During the only presidential debate between Harris and Trump, Trump claimed that Joe Biden “hated” his vice president. While Trump’s remarks were widely dismissed at the time, he may be vindicated in the final days of their administration, as tensions seem to reach a fever pitch both in public appearances and behind the scenes.
Ironically, while the Bidens’ relationship with Harris has appeared increasingly strained, their interactions with Donald Trump have been notably more congenial. Despite their political differences, both Joe and Jill Biden have been seen sharing warm, even friendly, exchanges with the former president on multiple occasions in recent months.
The tensions between Joe Biden and Kamala Harris became even more apparent when Biden notably skipped Harris’s election night party. The absence of the president from Harris’s celebration was seen by many as another sign of the rift between the two. While the White House downplayed the snub, claiming Biden’s schedule was simply too packed, the optics of the situation only deepened the sense of division within the party, with critics speculating that Biden’s absence might reflect something more meaningful, especially after a tumultuous campaign season. This followed other subtle and overt signs of friction between the two, further fueling speculation about the future of their political partnership.
