Trump Expresses Support For Le Pen Following Ban From Running, Prison Sentence

President Donald Trump has expressed his full support for Marine Le Pen, the leader of France’s right-wing National Rally party, after she was banned from running in future elections and handed a prison sentence. In a post on Truth Social Thursday night, Trump framed Le Pen’s legal troubles as part of a broader pattern of political persecution, comparing her situation to his own experiences.

Le Pen, who was once a frontrunner in French presidential elections, was sentenced earlier this week to four years in prison and a hefty fine of $350,000 for misusing $4.8 million in European Union funding. The funds were intended for assistants in the European Parliament, but Le Pen was accused of misappropriating them for personal use. Despite the prison sentence, Le Pen will serve her time with an electronic bracelet, avoiding traditional detainment.

In his Truth Social post, Trump strongly criticized what he called a witch hunt against Le Pen, accusing “European Leftists” of using “Lawfare” to silence free speech and censor political opponents. He echoed sentiments he has long held about his own legal battles, suggesting that Le Pen was being punished for a minor mistake—likely a “bookkeeping error”—right before a major political victory was within reach.

“The Witch Hunt against Marine Le Pen is another example of European Leftists using Lawfare to silence Free Speech, and censor their Political Opponent, this time going so far as to put that Opponent in prison,” Trump wrote. “I don’t know Marine Le Pen, but do appreciate how hard she worked for so many years. She suffered losses, but kept on going, and now, just before what would be a Big Victory, they get her on a minor charge that she probably knew nothing about – Sounds like a ‘bookkeeping’ error to me. It is all so bad for France, and the Great French People, no matter what side they are on. FREE MARINE LE PEN!”

This message has resonated deeply among his supporters, who believe that his own legal issues are part of an ongoing attempt to derail his political career.

Le Pen has long been one of France’s most prominent right-wing figures, and her party, National Rally, has steadily gained influence in recent years. Despite losing her bids for the French presidency in 2017 and 2022 to President Emmanuel Macron, she remains a major political force in the country. Le Pen’s rise has been marked by her strong stance on immigration, national sovereignty, and Euroscepticism, and she was a clear frontrunner for the 2027 presidential election, polling at 37%—a significant increase from her 2022 first-round vote.

Jordan Bardella, president of National Rally and a likely candidate for the 2027 presidency, has also condemned the ruling, calling it a direct attack on French democracy. On social media, Bardella criticized the legal decision, stating:

“Today, it is not only Marine Le Pen who is being unjustly condemned: it is French democracy that is being executed.”

Bardella’s comments reflect the growing disillusionment within French politics, as many believe that Le Pen’s legal troubles are politically motivated and a concerted effort to undermine her legitimacy ahead of the 2027 election.

Trump has repeatedly argued that his own legal troubles are politically motivated attacks on his ability to lead and campaign. In both cases, critics of their respective legal battles argue that they are being targeted not based on the actual severity of “crimes,” but because of their positions as political outsiders challenging the establishment.

For Le Pen, the timing of her conviction, just ahead of what was expected to be a significant moment in her political career, has only fueled the perception that she is the victim of an ongoing political agenda.
