President Donald Trump reignited his long-standing feud with Senator Elizabeth Warren during a press event in the Oval Office on the 90th anniversary of the Social Security Act, calling her a “nut job” and demanding she take a drug test.
The remarks came in response to a question about Warren and Senator Bernie Sanders allegedly spreading misinformation regarding Social Security. Trump used the opportunity to lash out at Warren’s recent political activity, particularly her endorsement of Zohran Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist running for mayor of New York City.
“She’s a nut job,” Trump said. “I watched her the other night. She’s all hopped up endorsing a communist in New York City, and she was all excited and jumping up and down. She’s got to take a drug test. There’s no way somebody can act that way and be normal.”
Renewed Attacks Over Native American Heritage Claim
Trump also returned to a familiar line of attack, referencing Warren’s past claims of Native American ancestry, which she used on job applications for Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania. He again mocked her with the nickname “Pocahontas,” a term he’s used repeatedly over the years to criticize what he views as dishonesty in her self-identification.
“She’s a liar,” Trump said. “Based on the fact that she was Indian, she was able to get into certain colleges, get certain jobs… She lied her whole career.”
Warren took a DNA test in 2018 to address the controversy, which revealed she was only 1/512th Native American. The test did little to calm critics and arguably intensified scrutiny over her claims.
Trump on Sanders: “Still Sharp”
While Trump had little positive to say about Warren, he struck a notably different tone when speaking about Senator Bernie Sanders. Though he called Sanders “wacky” and “very liberal,” Trump acknowledged Sanders’ continued political energy.
“He’s still sharp,” Trump said. “I got to tell you, you know, he’s 86, or 87, or something. He’s still sharp.”
Clashing Over Social Security
Warren and Sanders have both accused the Trump administration of undermining Social Security. Earlier this year, Warren wrote an op-ed for Fox News criticizing what she called Trump’s efforts to weaken the program.
“We shouldn’t be cutting Social Security services and threatening Americans’ benefits – we should be making the program stronger,” Warren wrote. She emphasized rising costs of living and pressures on retirement savings as reasons for expansion rather than reduction.
Trump, on the other hand, has maintained that any changes to Social Security under his leadership have been responsible and ensured the program’s long-term sustainability.
Despite their intense disagreements, Warren and Trump did find rare common ground earlier this year when both voiced support for eliminating the federal debt ceiling, a policy that has been a recurring source of political brinkmanship.
By aligning herself with Mamdani, Warren has provided new fuel for Trump’s broader narrative that today’s Democratic Party is shifting too far left — something he will likely highlight heading into the 2026 midterms and beyond.
Conclusion
His Oval Office remarks suggest that, even as policy debates unfold over issues like Social Security, Trump is still willing to engage in personal battles with prominent Democrats — especially those, like Warren, who have positioned themselves as ideological adversaries for years.
