Vice President JD Vance criticized Minnesota Governor Tim Walz following a series of federal raids tied to an ongoing investigation into alleged welfare fraud in the state.
The dispute comes after the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that multiple locations in Minnesota were searched as part of a broader federal probe. Among the sites referenced in reporting was a facility known as the “Quality Learning Center,” which had previously drawn attention in online coverage of the issue.
Walz posted on social media following the raids, appearing to take credit for the enforcement action.
“If you commit fraud in Minnesota you’re going to get caught — and that’s exactly what we saw today. We catch criminals when state and federal agencies share information. Joint investigations work, and securing justice depends on it,” Walz wrote on social media.
His comments were met with criticism from some Republicans, including Vance, who argued that state leadership had not played a central role in addressing the issue.
“This is like the arsonist trying to claim credit for the work of the fire department,” Vance said.
Investigative reporter Nick Shirley widely responsible for exposing the alleged fraud in Minnesota noted that Walz had dismissed his reporting as “delusional conspiracy” and “white supremacy.”
In an interview, Vance said that federal authorities and certain local law enforcement officers were primarily responsible for advancing the investigation. He added that cooperation from the governor’s office had been limited, while crediting task force members working on the ground for uncovering alleged fraud.
A spokesperson for Vance also pointed to broader federal efforts to combat fraud, describing the initiative as part of a nationwide push to identify and prosecute cases involving misuse of public funds.
The issue of alleged fraud in Minnesota has been developing for months. Earlier reports and investigations raised concerns about misuse of welfare programs, with federal officials estimating that billions of dollars may have been improperly obtained across multiple cases.
Walz, who previously announced he would not seek a third term as governor, has not directly responded to Vance’s latest remarks. His earlier statements emphasized enforcement actions without detailing the extent of state versus federal involvement.
The situation has drawn national political attention, intersecting with broader debates over oversight of public assistance programs and the responsibility of state and federal authorities. As the investigation continues, officials are expected to release more information about the scope of the alleged fraud and any charges that may follow.

Walz is a pathological liar just like many democrats. They are trying to create an alternate reality. Shame on us if we let them.
