Hope Walz, daughter of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, has stirred controversy after criticizing running influencer Kate Mackz for her recent White House interview with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. Mackz, known for her TikTok series “Post Run High,” posted a video featuring Leavitt providing a behind-the-scenes tour of the White House. The video, which has garnered nearly 2 million views, showcases Leavitt discussing her role and the administration’s media approach.
In an impassioned TikTok response, Hope Walz expressed her disapproval, callling running a “political act” tied to privilege and access and attributing the belief to her father. She claimed that when she first got into running in high school, he told her it was a privilege that not everyone had access to, listing time, “the money to buy the gear,” healthy food, and a “safe stable situation” and “good mental state.”
She argued that the Trump administration’s policies, such as cuts to mental health services and environmental protections (though the “protections” in question and their tangible impact on the planet are highly debatable), harm communities and hinder access to activities like running. Walz also criticized Mackz for continuing to feature her previous interview with Governor Walz, suggesting it was inconsistent with her recent collaboration with the Trump administration.
“But it’s also just damaging to society as a whole. We should not be normalizing these people. You don’t get to ‘both sides’ this,” Walz scolded. “We are quite literally talking about good versus evil here, and I’m just really disappointed the whole thing happened.”
The backlash to Walz’s comments has been swift and widespread. Conservatives and independents have mocked her statements, questioning her understanding of the issues at hand, with some even questioning her mental stability.
Many perceive her statements as out of touch and an example of extreme left-wing over-intellectualization. Rather than being seen as a thoughtful critique, her remarks were widely interpreted as a temper tantrum, reflecting frustration rather than informed analysis.
Fox News reports:
Fox News contributor Tomi Lahren argued that running was one of the few sports that’s readily available to most people before calling Walz’s larger message, that young people shouldn’t engage with those they disagree with politically, the most “damaging.”
After her father’s defeat alongside Vice President Kamala Harris, Hope took to social media to express her discontent with the election outcome. In a TikTok video, she criticized the American electorate for not deserving a leader like Harris, emphasizing that Black women were the only group who truly “delivered” during the election cycle. She urged Democrats to support their community during the next four years, expressing her disappointment in the results where Donald Trump and JD Vance emerged victorious.
