Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic Socialist and newly minted Democrat nominee for mayor of New York City, is facing scrutiny following the resurfacing of a 2021 video in which he calls for converting private housing into government-controlled communal properties. The video, produced for the far-left Gravel Institute, outlines a housing plan that critics say echoes socialist property policies abroad and could reshape private property rights in the city.
In the Gravel Institute video titled “How Socialists Solved the Housing Crisis,” Mamdani promotes a plan to “decommodify housing,” arguing for an aggressive government role in acquiring private real estate and converting it into so-called “community land trusts” and public housing.
“To go further toward the Vienna model, we’ll have to go beyond the market,” Mamdani says in the video. “We can establish community land trusts to gradually buy up housing on the private market and convert it to community ownership.”
“We can fully commit to a new era of social housing — ending subsidies for luxury housing development and using our wealth to build beautiful, high quality social housing projects that offer good homes and strong communities to everyone.”
Mamdani praised international examples, including Vienna’s extensive public housing system, while acknowledging that his plan would not transform the housing market overnight. However, he made clear that his long-term goal is fundamentally altering the structure of housing in America by reducing the scope of private ownership.
In a separate 2021 appearance at a Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) conference — just weeks after his video was published — Mamdani laid out the broader ideological goal behind his housing proposals.
“The end goal is seizing the means of production,” Mamdani told the audience, emphasizing the importance of electing more openly socialist candidates and building long-term support for structural economic change.
President Donald Trump, speaking on Fox News this week, criticized Mamdani’s nomination and warned that if he were elected mayor, it could put New York City’s federal funding in jeopardy.
“He’s a communist,” Trump said. “I don’t know that he’s going to get in — it’s inconceivable. But if he does, and I’m president, he’s going to have to do the right thing or they’re not getting any money.”
Mamdani’s housing proposals are likely to be a focal point in the general election campaign. Supporters say his plans could help address New York’s long-running housing affordability crisis, while critics argue they would undermine property rights, disincentivize development, and expand government power in unprecedented ways.
Mamdani, currently a New York State Assemblyman representing parts of Queens, defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic mayoral primary. His surprise victory positions him as the leading candidate for one of the most powerful municipal offices in the country, ahead of a three-way general election that includes incumbent Mayor Eric Adams running as an independent.
With former Governor Cuomo potentially launching a third-party campaign, the race could splinter traditional voting blocs and test the city’s political appetite for radical reform proposals.
