Born on June 20, 1942, in Inglewood, California, Wilson co-founded the Beach Boys with his brothers Carl and Dennis, cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. He was the band’s principal songwriter, producer, and arranger, crafting a distinctive sound that combined rich harmonies with innovative studio techniques. The group’s early hits, such as “Surfin’ U.S.A.” and “California Girls,” captured the spirit of 1960s Southern California.
Wilson’s ambition led to the creation of the 1966 album Pet Sounds, widely regarded as one of the greatest albums in popular music history. Its complex arrangements and introspective lyrics influenced countless artists and marked a significant evolution in the Beach Boys’ musical style.
Despite his professional success, Wilson faced personal challenges, including struggles with mental health and substance abuse. Diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, he spent periods away from the public eye but returned to music with solo projects and occasional reunions with the Beach Boys.
In 1995, Wilson married Melinda Ledbetter, who became his manager and played a pivotal role in his life and career. Following her death in January 2024, Wilson was placed under a conservatorship due to his major neurocognitive disorder.
Wilson’s legacy includes numerous accolades, such as induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and multiple Grammy Awards. His life and music were chronicled in the 2014 biopic Love & Mercy and the 2021 documentary Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road.
He is survived by his children, including daughters Carnie and Wendy Wilson, who found success with the pop group Wilson Phillips. Wilson’s contributions to music continue to resonate, reflecting his enduring influence on the art of songwriting and production.
