According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, Ransone’s death was attributed to hanging. Records list the location of death as a shed on the property.
A husband and father of two, Ransone built a lasting television legacy despite a relatively short career. His performance as Ziggy — volatile, reckless, and deeply tragic — made him one of The Wire’s most enduring characters. He later earned praise for his role as Marine Cpl. Josh Ray Person in Generation Kill.
Ransone spoke candidly in 2016 about his battle with addiction, which he later said stemmed from childhood sexual abuse, and about the difficult balance between recovery and career momentum.
He rejected the notion that his sobriety began during Generation Kill, telling Interview Magazine that he had already been sober for months before the project began. Ransone said he quit heroin at 27 after five years of use and recalled questioning whether he was prepared to take on a major role — including an extended stay in Africa — so soon after getting clean.
Fox News continues:
In 2021, according to Page Six, Ransone posted a lengthy email to his Instagram, claiming he was the victim of sexual abuse as a child. (The alleged post has since been taken down.)
Ransone accused his former tutor, Timothy Rualo, of allegedly sexually abusing him numerous times over the course of six months in 1992.
According to the alleged email, the abuse led to years of substance abuse and mental struggles.
The Wire, which aired from 2002 to 2008, remains one of television’s most acclaimed dramas. In the years since its finale, several members of the cast have died, often at relatively young ages.
Michael K. Williams, who portrayed Omar Little, died in 2021 at age 54 following an accidental overdose. Lance Reddick, who played Cedric Daniels, died suddenly in 2023 at age 60 from heart disease. Reg E. Cathey, who played Norman Wilson, died in 2018 at age 59 after battling lung cancer.
Federal health data show suicide remains a growing concern among men. The CDC reports that men account for nearly four times as many suicide deaths as women nationwide, with rates among younger and middle-aged men rising in recent years.
If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available. In the U.S., the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is available by calling or texting 988, or by visiting 988lifeline.org.
