Denmark has announced plans for a substantial military buildup in Greenland, allocating approximately $1.5 billion to bolster security on the Arctic island. This development comes just days after President-elect Trump reiterated his desire for U.S. ownership of Greenland, which he described as an “absolute necessity” for national security in a Truth Social post on Sunday.
Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen called the timing an “irony of fate,” but clarified that the defense package had been in the works for some time. In remarks reported by Jyllands-Posten, Poulsen emphasized that Denmark remains committed to collaborating with the United States to ensure Greenland’s protection.
The defense initiative includes significant upgrades, such as two Thetis-class patrol vessels, two long-range drones, two sled dog teams and an increase in Danish military personnel stationed on the island. The Arctic region’s strategic importance has grown as melting ice opens new shipping routes and resources, intensifying competition among global powers like the U.S., Russia and China.
The BBC provides further details on Poulsen’s vision to boost Arctic defenses:
It would also include funding for increased staffing at Arctic Command in the capital Nuuk and an upgrade for one of Greenland’s three main civilian airports to handle F-35 supersonic fighter aircraft.
“We have not invested enough in the Arctic for many years, now we are planning a stronger presence,” he said.
Greenland, a self-governing territory under Denmark’s jurisdiction, has consistently resisted external control. On Monday, Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute Egede, responded to Trump’s renewed interest in the island with a defiant Facebook post, saying “we are not for sale.”
But he added that Greenlanders should continue to be open for cooperation and trade, especially with their neighbours.
The U.S. has also ramped up its Arctic efforts, working with allies like Canada and Finland to develop patrol ships capable of navigating the region. Additionally, the Coast Guard recently announced the construction of a new heavy polar icebreaker, the first in over 50 years, to strengthen American presence in the Arctic.
Until now Denmark has been very slow to expand its military capacity in Greenland, they say, but if the country is not able to protect waters around the territory against encroachments by China and Russia then US demands for greater control are likely to grow.
Denmark, a NATO member and key U.S. ally in the Arctic, views the military package as a necessary measure to maintain security and stability in the face of increasing geopolitical tension in the region. According to officials in Copenhagen, it underscores the shared commitment of Western allies to counter the growing influence of Russia and China in this strategically critical area.

If Greenland delays establishing a close relationship with the USA, they can expect a hostile takeover by China or Russia.
That would not be good! They’d better be smart about the issue.
