Is Trump’s strategy working?

Posting to X on Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described his recent confrontation with U.S. President Donald Trump as “regrettable” and expressed his readiness to work under Trump’s leadership to achieve lasting peace. The incident occurred during a tense Oval Office meeting on Feb. 28, 2025, which ended abruptly and led to the suspension of U.S. military aid to Ukraine.

In a statement following the meeting, Zelensky emphasized Ukraine’s commitment to peace and willingness to engage in negotiations. He proposed initiating the process with mutual prisoner releases and a ceasefire covering air and sea attacks, contingent upon reciprocal actions from Russia. Zelensky acknowledged the importance of U.S. support in maintaining Ukraine’s sovereignty and expressed hope for constructive future cooperation.

The Oval Office meeting, intended to finalize a minerals agreement granting the U.S. access to Ukraine’s rare earth elements, devolved into a heated exchange. Trump accused Zelensky of risking global conflict by not pursuing peace with Russia, while Zelensky cautioned against trusting Russian President Vladimir Putin. The confrontation led to the cancellation of a planned press conference and the suspension of U.S. military aid to Ukraine until a commitment to peace negotiations is demonstrated.

Vice President JD Vance commented on the altercation, attributing it to a perceived lack of respect and entitlement from Zelensky. Vance noted that the dispute escalated when Trump insisted on discussing matters publicly, despite suggestions to handle them privately. The subsequent spat immediately raised concerns about the future of U.S.-Ukraine relations and the ongoing conflict with Russia.
