Trump Says China Emerged As The Real Winner In Birthright Ruling

PAUL’S DEFENSE BRIEF (PDB): Trump congratulated China on its “massive … win” after the Supreme Court shot down his executive order attempting to restrict birthright citizenship in the U.S.

The Court said the Constitution guarantees automatic citizenship to nearly everyone born on U.S. soil, including children of undocumented immigrants and temporary visitors.

During oral arguments, Trump’s team pointed to China’s “birth tourism,” where Chinese women come to the U.S. specifically to give birth. Those children enjoy automatic citizenship.

An entire industry has emerged to facilitate these births, charging tens of thousands of dollars to help foreign women get travel visas, house them while they’re here, and even apply for government assistance programs to help offset medical costs.

Birth tourism isn’t limited to China, though it’s a huge player. These women usually return home with their new children, who are raised far from U.S. shores. Justices Thomas and Alito, who dissented from the ruling, cited the problem of tourism in their opinions.

Alito added that the practice creates a national security issue by allowing people from enemy nations to obtain U.S. citizenship, go back home, and be raised as enemies of the U.S.

NATIONAL SECURITY

As relationship between U.S. and Canada continues to degrade, it comes at expense of two countries’ defense industrial alliance.

In U.S. the ties between industry and defense go back to country’s founding. Starting with George Washington creating Springfield Armory, country has fused war and business like never before.

DEFENSE POLITICS

Billionaire venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, one-time Democrat supporter who switched to Donald Trump, got spot with several other prominent GOP politicians and former officials on top Pentagon advisory board.

US POWER OVERSEAS

As Army contends with shortage of ships to carry troops and supplies in Pacific, it’s pressing contract vessels into service while looking to future with up to 100 heavy-duty autonomous drone watercraft to do big part of that job.

U.S., NATO sailors train to counter swarm surface drone threats. Northerly waters recently served to show sailors how to spot and destroy deadly surface drones.

CHINA THREAT

China’s Latest Pressure Tactics Are Tightening the Screws on Japan. Beijing’s moves have included flying bombers near Japan, detaining businesspeople and restricting exports of rare earths.

IRAN WAR/DEAL

U.S. and Iran pause strikes but disagree over next steps on talks. The U.S. and Iran separately announced they will send delegations to Qatar. However, Tehran insisted it has not agreed to meet with the U.S. “at any level,” following attacks across the Persian Gulf that challenged negotiations to end the war.

How ships are risking ‘safe’ passage through the Strait of Hormuz. A plan to divert shipping through an alternative corridor off the Omani coast to avoid the threat of mines in the Strait of Hormuz has come under scrutiny after two attacks on ships in recent days.

Hmm? Iran didn’t win the war. Much of Washington has greeted the Iran cease-fire deal with scorn. After more than three months of war, the U.S. and Israel failed to achieve many of their objectives, which included overthrowing the regime in Tehran and ending a potential Iranian nuclear threat.

RUSSIA THREAT/UKRAINE WAR

One of Russia’s commercially flagged vessels in Baltic has appeared armed with heavy machine guns. These weapons are likely intended to provide close-in protection against naval drone attacks, but they also represent evidence of the increasing measures taken by Moscow to ensure military bases in its strategically important Kaliningrad exclave continue to be supported.
