An American citizen is facing espionage charges in Israel after authorities accused him of working on behalf of Iranian intelligence, marking the latest case in what Israeli officials say is an increasingly aggressive effort by Tehran to recruit operatives inside the country.
The suspect, a U.S. citizen in his 20s whose name has not been released under Israeli legal restrictions, was arrested on June 9 in a joint operation by the Israel Police and the Shin Bet internal security agency. Israeli authorities announced Tuesday that prosecutors have now filed a formal statement of charges, with an indictment expected in the coming days.
According to Israeli authorities, the investigation began after intelligence shared by international security partners identified suspicious activity linked to the suspect.
Investigators allege the American spent months communicating with Iranian intelligence handlers and accepted payments ranging from tens to hundreds of dollars for individual assignments.
Those assignments allegedly included photographing and documenting what authorities described as “sensitive sites” throughout Israel.
The investigation was conducted under a sweeping gag order imposed by the Jerusalem District Court, allowing investigators to quietly gather evidence while repeatedly extending the suspect’s detention over the past several weeks.
With the investigation now complete, prosecutors are expected to seek his continued detention while the case moves through the Israeli court system, according to The Jerusalem Post.
Israeli officials say the arrest is part of a broader campaign by Iran to recruit individuals online to collect intelligence inside Israel.
“In recent months, several defendants suspected of spying for the enemy have been exposed, some of whom allegedly acted during wartime and thereby assisted the enemy in advancing its plans within Israel,” Chief Inspector Amichai Panta, an investigations officer in the Jerusalem District’s Central Unit, said, according to Israeli media reports.
The latest arrest comes as Israeli security officials warn that Iran has dramatically increased its espionage efforts since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war and the subsequent direct military confrontations between Israel and Iran.
Dozens of Israelis have reportedly been arrested in recent years on allegations they accepted money from Iranian operatives to photograph military installations, track senior officials, or gather other intelligence. Earlier this year, Israeli authorities announced charges against two Israeli Air Force technicians accused of providing sensitive military information to Iranian intelligence in exchange for financial compensation.
Security officials have repeatedly warned that Iranian intelligence frequently approaches potential recruits through social media and encrypted messaging platforms, often beginning with seemingly harmless requests before escalating to more sensitive intelligence-gathering assignments.
The U.S. State Department has not publicly commented on the latest arrest. If convicted, the American suspect could face significant prison time under Israeli national security laws.
