Bill Belichick And The Case For Term Limits

-

I have always and will always be a big fan of the New England Patriots' Bill Belichick. He is the best football coach of all time.

Unfortunately, it pains me to say that he is now the poster child for term limits. The problems plaguing the New England Patriots are the same problems that are plaguing – people staying in their jobs too long. Every Sunday, we are watching the unraveling of the Patriots because Mac Jones stinks as a quarterback, and Bill has stayed too long. His decisions don't seem based on winning but rather on employing friends and family.

Bill should have moved on last year after the team's owner, Bob Kraft, sent out a public nastygram that no job is secure on the team. Bill fired back that the team's spending is one of the lowest in the NFL, indicating the winning coach has not been getting the support he needs from Kraft.

So why stay? Bill is like every good politician, taking care of family members with his two sons on the football coaching staff. Hence, his family is dependent on him remaining in his role with the Patriots. Instead of making them stand on their own feet, Daddy is keeping them employed. His son, Stephen, may be the greatest defensive coach, but in Daddy's shadow, there is no way to really know.

Everyday sports radio is feasting on the hide of Belichick. It is a field day of second-guessing and forgetting the dynasty he built for two decades. If only he had left, these vultures would have nothing to chew on.

Now, can you imagine if people popped a beer to watch the ongoings in D.C. on Sundays, Monday nights or now Thursdays? Taylor Swift would probably find a congressman to date to get the exposure.

Like so many Pat fans are demanding the head of Bill Belichick, the public would be even more outraged at the political gamesmanship happening because members of Congress have been in their jobs too long. While Bill coaches a football team with no real relevant impact on our lives, Washington is setting tax and energy policies, supposed to be protecting our nation and preserving our rights.

The average person has not watched the replays of freezing at multiple pressers. They don't know that Congress stacks the important spending bills with pet projects that don't deserve tax dollars. They don't know that while states balance their budgets, the federal has not. They don't comprehend the enormity of our national debt. They don't know that special interest groups control members of Congress with their PAC money. All of this happening due to the system of seniority in Congress. The longer a member stays the more power they have.

But look at the power Belichick has used over the past two years. Has it been for the greater good of the team? Or has it been just what he wanted? You can say the same about Congress.

When I asked a congressman why he didn't vote for Jim Jordan, the response was that Jordan had not guaranteed to take care of his district. In other words, Jordan did not buy his vote. So much for putting country first!

Like Belichick's family is benefiting, so have the families of elected officials. Where did McConnell's wife work? She got a cabinet post with the Trump administration. Wonder why? Senator Menendez's wife seems to have gotten a pass on her car accident, killing a pedestrian. Wonder why?

If watching Washington was a national pastime, like football, we would have term limits.
