The House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a war powers resolution aimed at ending unauthorized U.S. military involvement in Iran, marking the most significant congressional challenge yet to President Donald Trump’s handling of the conflict.

The measure, sponsored by Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) invokes the 1973 War Powers Resolution and would require the administration to obtain explicit authorization from Congress before continuing hostilities against Iran, except in cases involving an imminent threat to the United States. The vote followed months of growing bipartisan concern over a conflict that began in.

Washington woke up this week to a trio of unsettling headlines—each raising questions about security, executive power, and the conduct of the nation’s top law-enforcement officials.

Homeland Security Under Scrutiny After Afghan Vetting Failures

Internal Department of Homeland Security documents revealed that more than 5,000 Afghan migrants brought into the U.S. under President Biden’s Operation Allies Welcome were flagged for national security concerns. In total, DHS identified “potential derogatory information” on nearly 7,000 individuals who arrived following the 2021 Afghanistan withdrawal, with over 885 people who triggered national-security alerts still residing in the country as of September.

The disclosures landed just days after the alleged ambush killing of National Guardswoman Sarah Beckstrom in Washington, D.C., and the critical wounding of another Guardsman by the name of Andrew Wolfe. The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal—who reportedly worked alongside the CIA in Afghanistan—“should never have been allowed to come here,” CIA Director John Ratcliffe said. A DOJ Inspector General report had already found that 55 individuals on U.S. terror watch lists reached American ports of entry as recently as 2023.

Sen. Chuck Grassley said the tragedy validates long-standing warnings about the Biden administration’s vetting. In response, President Trump ordered a fresh review of protocols for migrants from 19 “high-risk” countries and for all asylum cases approved under the previous administration.

Trump Declares Biden’s Autopen Orders ‘Terminated’

President Trump announced he is voiding executive orders allegedly signed with an autopen during Joe Biden’s presidency. Trump asserted that “approximately 92%” of Biden-era directives were signed mechanically rather than by the president himself—an allegation now under separate investigation by Attorney General Pam Bondi following a House Oversight Committee report.

Trump argued that the autopen was used illegally and without Biden’s direct authorization. Former Biden aide Neera Tanden previously testified that she was permitted to direct the autopen for nearly two years and had only “minimal” contact with Biden during that period, raising new questions about who approved which documents. Trump, leaning into the political symbolism, said he would include a “Biden Autopen” portrait in a new “Presidential Wall of Fame.”

New York AG Letitia James Faces Bar Complaint After Charges Dismissed

Fresh off the dismissal of federal mortgage-fraud charges against her, New York Attorney General Letitia James now faces a bar complaint over the same allegations. The Center to Advance Security in America asked the state’s Attorney Grievance Committee to investigate what it calls “illegal and dishonest conduct,” arguing the misconduct should be reviewed even though a Clinton-appointed federal judge tossed the case.

Prosecutors had claimed James misrepresented the intended use of a Virginia home when securing a $109,000 mortgage—saying it would be her secondary residence, while allegedly renting it out to family instead. The charges were dismissed not on evidentiary grounds but because the DOJ attorney who brought them, Lindsey Halligan, was ruled not legally authorized to serve in that capacity. Charges against former FBI Director James Comey—brought by the same attorney—were tossed on identical grounds.

The DOJ says it will appeal. CASA, which previously filed bar complaints against Comey as well, says the allegations merit discipline if substantiated.
