Chris Cuomo had choice words for the Democratic National Convention and what he called a “pay to play” arrangement that prioritized the rich as speakers claimed to want to “even the playing field.”
“A big theme here at the DNC is that they are going to go after corporate gouging and they’re going to go after corporations, whether it’s in taxes, largess, loopholes…let me reveal a reality to you, that has to be spoken to here.”
They showed a split screen of the convention floor hallway, showing delegates and other “regular” attendees milling about.
“These are the soldiers. These are the men and the women that go back to their constituencies and their communities, and they fight. They take time from their jobs, they take time from their families — Republicans and Democrats alike. That’s what they do. They need to charge these people up, they need to be able to get them on board. But there’s another reality that is literally looking down on them. Greg, look at the ring of suites, okay?”
The camera man pans upwards to the suites circling the convention floor.
“There is a game of money. We are strangled by the money reality in our politics. Those suites start at $500 grand. You think there’s like a teacher group up in there? You think it’s like the Cub Scouts of Columbia County, SC, that’s up in those boxes?”
The sponsorship levels went from $100,000 to $5,000,000 and included six tiers. $100,000 donors were granted two credentials to the “honored guest super suite,” a podium preview ticket and one premium hotel room. A $500,000 donation secured 20 suite credentials, podium preview tickets and five premium hotel rooms. A contribution of $1 million guaranteed donors 20 suite credentials, podium preview tickets and 10 premium hotel rooms. For every donation above $1 million, credentials remained the same but more premium hotel rooms were included and suite level. For $500,000 more, donors were entitled to 20 premium hotel rooms. A $2.5 million contribution booked 28 premium hotel rooms, and a $5 million gift purchased 40 premium hotel rooms.
“The media boxes, you think they’re free? Why do you think I’m on the floor? News Nation is not a broke company…we are corporate media. We don’t have one of those boxes, cause that’s the game. You pay to play.”
Chris Cuomo was fired from his lofty senior position at CNN 3 years ago, and took a position with a network with much less name recognition. Some perceived his remarks as a bitter rampage from someone who was once in the suites and believed he still belonged there, but whose life circumstances had forced him the convention floor.
“Those boxes are filled with the same people they say they’re gonna regulate. They are literally looking down on the faithful…and they’re gonna take them down? They’re gonna change how it is? They’re looking down from on high at the people who make the difference in their communities, and that is the reality of politics.”
He then went on to share statistics about changes in campaign finance over the last 2.5 decades.
“In 2000 they spent $300,000 on presidential campaigns. 24 years later you know what they’re expected to spend? $10 billion.
