PAUL’S DAILY BRIEF (PDB) Wednesday – From hub & spoke to spiderweb: The evolution of the Indo-Pacific alliance structure. The sweeping evolution away from the legacy U.S.-centric hub-and-spoke model to an interlocking ‘spiderweb’ model is spearheaded by key regional players.
Since the new structure is decentralized, it achieves enhanced flexibility and resilience uncommon in traditional hub-and-spoke or multilateral alliances, which require top-down direction.
This big shift changes role in the Indo-Pacific from a primary mover to an energetic coordinator.
The region represents over half the world’s population and 60 percent of its GDP. If an adversary were able to control this decisive region, they would be able to project influence across the globe.
This would represent a direct threat to the U.S.-led international order, security and prosperity.
Communist China has emerged as the major power in this decisive region and represents a pervasive threat. Its stated national objective is to achieve “the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation” by 2049.
And this means aggressive actions in the region and replacing the US as world leader. The US needs Asian allies to lead.
FOR YOUR EYES ONLY – Here’s a roundup of today’s other top defense stories from conservative national security expert PAUL CRESPO.
