California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) has signed a new law that prohibits local jurisdictions from enforcing voter identification requirements. The legislation, introduced by Sen. Dave Min (D-Orange County), aims to prevent local governments from instituting their own ID requirements at the polls.
The law is a direct response to a ballot initiative passed in Huntington Beach, where 53.4% of residents voted in favor of requiring photo ID for voting.
Per Politico:
The Republican-led city, whose leaders often tussle with Sacramento Democrats, has maintained that its status as a charter city gives it home rule over elections administration.
But Attorney General Rob Bonta and Secretary of State Shirley Weber aren’t buying it: The officials sued Huntington Beach in April to invalidate the law, arguing it interferes with state voting rights protections.
“The right to freely cast your vote is the foundation of our democracy and Huntington Beach’s voter ID policy flies in the face of this principle,” Bonta said in an April statement regarding the lawsuit.
Min’s legislation is one of nearly a half-dozen bills introduced by Democratic state lawmakers this past year looking to close legal gray areas in state election laws. The changes aim to prevent Huntington Beach, Shasta County and other conservative local governments from establishing election policies that are often driven by suspicions of voter fraud.
According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, California is one of 14 states that does not require voter identification for elections. The latest move from Sacramento solidifies the state’s stance against voter ID requirements.
Other states that do not require any documentation to vote include Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Illinois, Minnesota, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon and Hawaii.

I have a hard time seeing and understanding what happened to CA.I lived there 17 years ,watched some of the – 84 Olympics and life was fairly safe from criminals. Now it is a complete sewer ,streets are peed and crapped on ,bus stops shelters are living rooms for homeless, their baggage and crack heads. Is this what Democrats/Communist want and like?
Another JA Grewsom move. I think you absolutely need to prove your ID and citizenship status to vote. It IS in the Constitution that you MUST be a US citizen to vote in a Federal election. If you can’t or don’t want to prove it, you should be disqualified immediately. Sorry to all of you delusional blue voters.
Goose steppin’ Kalifornia doesn’t care who votes!
