US Leads Multinational Effort To Destroy Syria’s Chemical Weapons Following Assad Regime Collapse

The United States, working alongside an international coalition, is spearheading efforts to dismantle and destroy the stockpiles of poison gas and nerve agents of Syria’s recently deposed president, Bashar al-Assad. The operation comes in the wake of Assad’s sudden departure from power, triggered by a rapid offensive led by Islamist rebel groups in the country’s northwest. Many of their leaders have longstanding ties to al-Qaeda, further complicating the region’s already volatile security situation. Assad and his remaining family members in Syria fled to Moscow over the weekend, where they were granted political asylum, marking a dramatic end to his autocratic rule.

In response, the international community, led by the U.S., has shifted its focus to ensuring the destruction of Syria’s substantial chemical weapons stockpiles to prevent them from falling into the wrong hands.

Airstrikes Against ISIS Amidst Chaos

Following Assad’s departure, reports of U.S.-led coalition airstrikes near the city of Deir ez-Zor surfaced on social media. Later on Sunday, President Joe Biden confirmed these operations, explaining they were part of a concerted effort to prevent ISIS from exploiting the power vacuum in Syria.

U.S. Central Command detailed the scope of the airstrikes, noting the deployment of strategic assets, including B-52H bombers, F-15E fighters and A-10C close-support aircraft, to neutralize over 75 ISIS targets in central and eastern Syria. Chemical Weapons Take Center Stage

However, the top priority for decision-makers in Washington remains the fallen regime’s considerable stockpiles of chemical weapons.

As Mediaite reports:

According to Axios, U.S. intelligence is worried that terrorist groups will take advantage of the sudden fall of the Syrian army to capture dangerous weapons controlled by the now defunct Assad regime.

“We will support international efforts to hold the Assad regime and its backers accountable for atrocities and abuses perpetrated against the Syrian people, including the use of chemical weapons,” said Secretary of State Antony Blinken in a statement on Sunday.

The Assad regime infamously used chemical weapons against civilians in rebel territory in 2013. At the time, the war crime violated then-President Barack Obama’s “red line” that he vowed would trigger U.S. intervention.

Instead of invading Syria; however, the Obama administration at the time made a deal with the Kremlin to destroy Assad’s remaining chemical weapons. However, western intelligence officials believe the regime did not follow the deal and continued storing dangerous chemical weapons.

The international coalition, including Israel, is working aggressively neutralize these weapons.
