CNN Politely Interviews Jihadist Leader With $10 Million US Bounty To Discuss Syria Crisis

Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, leader of the al-Qaeda-linked Hayʼat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), gave an interview to CNN this weekend, casting himself as a “moderate rebel” amid Syria’s enduring civil war. This portrayal has drawn sharp criticism due to his well-documented past as a senior al-Qaeda operative and his involvement in a campaign of terror during the Iraq war, including attacks on U.S. troops.

The U.S. State Department lists him as a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist” and continues to offer a $10 million bounty for his capture.

Jolani’s Record Under Scrutiny

Despite Jolani’s attempts to rebrand himself with CNN’s help, public commentary has highlighted his notorious past. Community notes on X, remind viewers that he was appointed “general emir” of al-Qaeda’s Syrian branch in 2012 and has been implicated in crimes ranging from terrorism to manslaughter.

As The Guardian reports:

Jolani operated from the shadows for years. Now, he is in the limelight, giving interviews to the international media and appearing on the ground in Syria’s second city Aleppo after wresting it from government control for the first time in the country’s civil war.

He has over the years stopped sporting the turban worn by jihadists, often favouring military fatigues instead. On Wednesday, he wore a khaki shirt and trousers to visit Aleppo’s citadel, standing at the door of his white vehicle as he waved and moved through the crowds.

Since breaking ties with Al-Qaida in 2016, Jolani has sought to portray himself as a more moderate leader. But he is yet to quell suspicions among analysts and western governments that still class HTS as a terrorist organisation.

“He is a pragmatic radical,” said Thomas Pierret, a specialist in political Islam.

“In 2014, he was at the height of his radicalism,” Pierret explained, referencing the days when Jolani was in direct competition with ISIS. “Since then, he has moderated his rhetoric.”

After the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, Jolani was drawn to jihadist thought.

“It was as a result of this admiration for the 9/11 attackers that the first signs of jihadism began to surface in Jolani’s life, as he began attending secretive sermons and panel discussions in marginalized suburbs of Damascus,” the Middle East Eye news website reported.

His early involvement in terrorist activities began in Iraq, where he joined al-Qaeda to fight against U.S. forces and was later detained by the Americans.

The State of the Syrian Civil War

Rapidly evolving developments suggest Russia may abandon Syria altogether, potentially leaving President Bashar al-Assad in a fatal position. According to a source cited by Bloomberg News, the Kremlin has made clear that its military priorities lie elsewhere. With Syrian forces melting away in the face of multiple offensives, Assad’s position grows increasingly tenuous.

Opposition Nears Damascus

Rebel forces have made significant gains throughout the weekend, capturing several cities and advancing toward Damascus. The opposition’s progress has fueled speculation about an imminent attempt to unseat Assad, with the potential to fundamentally alter the region’s power dynamics.

U.S. Response: Trump Urges Non-Intervention

President-elect Donald Trump weighed in on Saturday, not-so-subtly calling on the Biden administration to avoid involvement. Writing on Truth Social, Trump emphasized that the Syrian conflict is not a U.S. fight, warning against another foreign entanglement. “Opposition fighters in Syria are on the outskirts of Damascus, obviously preparing to make a very big move toward taking out Assad,” he noted, calling for restraint.

Implications for the Region

With the Assad regime weaker than ever, the situation in Syria remains highly fluid. Jolani’s public relations campaign highlights the complexities of a conflict that has drawn in global powers, displaced millions and left the future of the Middle East increasingly uncertain.
