The peer-to-peer car rental platform Turo is facing heightened scrutiny after two deadly incidents involving vehicles rented through its service.
In New Orleans, a rented Ford F-150 Lightning, driven by Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old radicalized Army veteran with alleged ISIS ties, plowed through a crowded French Quarter on New Year’s Eve. The attack left at least 15 dead and dozens injured, devastating the iconic tourist destination.

Meanwhile, on the Las Vegas Strip, a rented Tesla Cybertruck detonated in a car bombing under the porte-cochère of the Trump International Hotel on New Year’s Day. The explosion resulted in the attacker’s death and seven injuries. Officials noted that the Cybertruck’s reinforced panels helped contain the blast, averting greater destruction. Multiple outlets have identified the suspect as Matthew Livelsberger, a 37-year-old Colorado Springs resident with military ties.

Both vehicles were confirmed to have been acquired through Turo, a platform described as the “world’s largest car-sharing marketplace.” Turo requires users to verify their identity with a driver’s license and personal information, but critics question whether these measures are sufficient to screen out potential threats.
A Turo spokesperson expressed shock and sorrow over the attacks, stating:
“We are heartbroken to learn that one of our host’s vehicles was involved in this awful incident. We are actively partnering with the FBI. We are not currently aware of anything in this guest’s background that would have identified him as a trust and safety threat to us at the time of the reservation.”
Law enforcement agencies have characterized the connection between the two attacks as coincidental, though investigations remain ongoing.
The attacks have sparked heated debates over the security vulnerabilities of peer-to-peer platforms. Critics argue that Turo’s remote-access features, designed for convenience, may inadvertently facilitate misuse by bad actors. Global security expert Sara Adams underscored the rising threat of hybrid terrorist tactics, warning that organizations like ISIS are increasingly employing unconventional methods for mass-casualty events.
