Border Czar Tom Homan responded firmly on Monday to criticism over the Trump administration’s mass deportation efforts, saying he owes “no apologies” for the aggressive enforcement of immigration laws despite an emotional video from celebrity Selena Gomez.
Gomez, 32, shared a tearful video on Instagram in which she expressed outrage over the deportations of “[her] people” and accused the Trump administration of “attacking children.” Her post, which has since been deleted, went viral and sparked widespread discussion, particularly among Hollywood figures and immigrant rights activists. The emotional video prompted a sharp retort from Homan, who oversees the administration’s immigration enforcement efforts.
“I don’t think we’ve arrested any families. We’ve arrested public safety and national security threats, bottom line,” Homan said in response. “Look, President Trump won the election on this one issue: securing our border and saving lives. What happened at our southern border in the last four years is the biggest national security threat this country’s seen in my lifetime. You’ve got 2 million known gotaways, an increase in sex trafficking, a record number of terrorists crossing the border, and a quarter of a million Americans dying from fentanyl coming across that open border.”
The comments came in the wake of a major ramp-up in enforcement operations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Over the past week, ICE has arrested more than 2,000 individuals, including many with violent criminal histories, who have been deemed public safety and national security threats. These actions are part of a broader crackdown on illegal migration and criminal activity at the southern border, which President Trump has declared a national emergency.
Homan emphasized that the deportations are focused on individuals who pose the greatest risks to American communities. “It’s all for the good of this nation, and we’re going to keep going. No apologies, and we’re moving forward,” he asserted. He argued that the mass deportation efforts would reduce crime, address the fentanyl crisis, and curb sex trafficking, all issues that Trump has regularly highlighted as central to his administration’s border policies.
The order also revoked the Biden-era policies that allowed illegal immigrants to stay in the U.S. while they awaited hearings and reinstated the controversial “Remain in Mexico” policy.
In addition to the national emergency declaration, Trump’s administration has ramped up the use of military resources to address the crisis, deploying 1,500 active-duty troops to the southern border and utilizing military aircraft to assist with deportations.
Homan further pointed out that in one week, ICE agents arrested over 2,000 criminals, including a suspected terrorist, members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, and several individuals with convictions for violent crimes such as child sex offenses. On Sunday alone, ICE detained 956 individuals, a significant increase over the average 310 daily arrests under the previous administration.
The mass deportations have also led to some high-profile arrests, such as that of a Haitian migrant with 17 prior criminal convictions, who was apprehended during a sweep in Boston. Other arrests included an illegal Brazilian national wanted for armed robbery, an El Salvadoran suspect charged with rape, and a Dominican national facing assault and heroin trafficking charges.
Homan maintained that the administration’s policies align with the law and the safety of the American people. “If they don’t like it, then go to Congress and change the law.”
