French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot revealed that France has discussed deploying troops to Greenland to support Denmark amid alleged threats from U.S. President Donald Trump to annex the Danish territory. Barrot stressed that the European Union will not tolerate threats to its sovereign borders but clarified that deploying troops is “not Denmark’s wish” at this time. He added, “If Denmark calls for help, France will be there.”
Other European Union countries have also expressed “very strong support” for Denmark, with some reportedly considering sending their own troops to the world’s largest island. The discussions occurred during a recent EU foreign ministers meeting, highlighting the growing concern over Greenland’s geopolitical importance.
The EU’s response highlights growing unease over President Trump’s Arctic ambitions. A tense 45-minute phone call between Trump and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reportedly escalated tensions, with Trump allegedly threatening retaliatory measures against Denmark, including targeted tariffs, if the tiny U.S. ally refused to meet his demands.

“The intent was very clear: they want it. The Danes are now in crisis mode,” one official stated regarding Trump’s intentions. Another source echoed this sentiment, adding: “The Danes are completely freaked out by this.”
Denmark is actively seeking to strengthen its alliances within Europe to reinforce its control over Greenland. Prime Minister Frederiksen has been engaging with European leaders, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron, to discuss the situation. The prospect of stationing European troops in Greenland remains raised, though Denmark is weary about escalating tensions further.
Denmark’s Dilemma
Denmark has faced criticism for long-term neglect of Greenland’s defense infrastructure. Trump’s renewed interest in Greenland has added urgency to addressing these concerns.
Despite that, Greenland’s prime minister, Múte Egede, has also rejected the idea of U.S. annexation, emphasizing the island’s desire for greater autonomy from Denmark. While Egede remains open to expanded cooperation with the U.S., he has made his opinion clear that Greenland is not for sale.
Anders Vistisen, a Danish Member of the European Parliament, was decidedly more blunt. “Greenland has been part of the Danish Kingdom for 800 years. It is not for sale,” he stated, adding, “Let me put it in words you might understand: f*ck off.”

A White House National Security Council spokesperson reaffirmed the Trump administration’s stance, stating, “The president is committed to protecting U.S. interests in the Arctic.”
The spokesperson added that Greenland’s security is vital for both nations and emphasized the importance of mutual prosperity.
Historical Tensions Over Greenland
This isn’t the first time Greenland has been the center of international attention. President Trump made headlines in 2019 when he suggested that the U.S. could purchase the resource-rich Arctic island, citing its strategic and economic value. Greenland is home to significant deposits of rare earth elements (REEs), essential for technologies like smartphones, satellites and guided missiles.
The island’s location at the intersection of the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans also makes it a critical chokepoint for maritime routes. As Arctic ice melts, new shipping lanes, such as the Northwest Passage, are opening, reducing transit times between Asia, Europe and North America.
Since the Cold War, Greenland has been a strategic asset for the U.S., hosting Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule Air Base) in its northern region. The base houses a key early-warning radar system as part of the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System radar network (BMEWS radar network), crucial for monitoring missile warnings and space surveillance from near-peer rivals like Russia and China.
As tensions escalate in the Arctic between the West and East, Europe’s solidarity with Denmark presents a potential roadblock to President Trump’s ambitions in the region.

“If Denmark calls for help, France will be there.” oh like in WW2
yeah, right…..France will stop Trump. That’s a good one.
Time to check foreign aid status.
Just baffle gab
The truth is that Greenland is up for grabs. Nuclear armed France wants to grab Greenland for the EU – protecting Greenland from the US is all about the WEF wanting it for the EU globalists
France, our most reliable ally. They’re always there when they need us.
Wow, the mighty French Army!
If Greenland proclaims its independence and it is recognized by the United Nations, any action by France against the USA in its “rented” bases would be foolish. If Greenland chooses to align with the USA in such a manner as Puerto Rico, the USVI, or other territories that is their business and not Frances.
I cannot imagine that Pres. Trump has any real intention of taking Greenland by force. Trump is a very smart man and one of helluva deal maker. I am sure he can see the enormous downside risk in the eyes of the world should he even make moves in such a direction. A massive risk to his own presidency to be sure. His own party would turn against him not to mention the population. Nope, can’t see it.
Have any of these countries asked the residents of Greenland what they think?
The ONLY survey I have seen suggests they side with Trump.
If France tries it, their profitable markets for their wines, and second rate cheeses would be entirely gone, and people in the EU have little in extra resources financially assist France in its financial stress which would take place with France making that military move. How do you say–Learn to wear your ass for a hat in French.
I would tell the European Parliament to f*** off right back at them. Denmark has done nothing for Greenland and even Greenlanders themselves are more receptive to a stronger relationship with the US than what exists now. The EU and all their mealy mouthed toadies can go pound sand for all I care. And if the French think they scare anybody with their armed forces threat, well… thanks for the laughs. They’d last about 45 minutes before American military might erases them from the planet so my advice to them is to just tais toi !! If the native Greenlanders don’t want any association with the US then there won’t be any, but these old fossils doddering around the EU with their ingrained hatred for anything American are laughable to the point of being almost Chaplinesque.
