A recent focus group in Arizona revealed an interesting shift in voter sentiment, as a group of swing voters who backed Joe Biden in 2020 expressed clear approval of President Donald Trump’s executive actions and the cost-cutting initiatives led by tech billionaire Elon Musk. The participants, all of whom flipped their support from Biden to Trump in the 2024 election, voiced strong backing for the aggressive start to the Trump administration, even if some of the methods were seen as unconventional.
The Engagious/Sago focus group, consisting of 11 participants, unanimously supported the president’s flurry of executive orders. The group appeared to be mostly unphased by the legal challenges Trump’s administration is facing, including several cases currently being litigated in courts. One participant summed up the group’s consensus, stating, “It’s needed to get America back on track.”
When questioned about the potential for Trump to defy the Supreme Court in order to push through his policy goals, the focus group expressed little concern. “That wouldn’t happen. I’m not even thinking about it,” one participant remarked, while another dismissed concerns as mere “fearmongering.”
This is noteworthy, considering the Democratic narrative of a “constitutional crisis” dominating legacy media outlets. Trump is currently enjoying his highest ratings as president, which may indicate that a plurality of voters are growing numb to the alarmist rhetoric that his opposition has adopted.
The group’s strong approval extended beyond Trump to include Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, who has been at the forefront of the administration’s cost-cutting efforts. Musk’s leadership in “cleaning house” within federal agencies resonated with the participants, many of whom believed that his transparency was a key factor in their trust in him. “I approve because I believe he’s transparent, and we haven’t had that for the last four years,” said one participant. Musk’s cost-cutting agenda was widely supported, with little concern expressed about any potential conflicts of interest, despite his prominent role in both the tech industry and his newfound influence in the political sphere.
However, the group was not without its differences. While the majority of the participants were enthusiastic about Trump’s aggressive agenda, there was a significant area of misalignment regarding his proposal for handling the situation in Gaza. Trump’s suggestion of redeveloping Gaza under U.S. control was met with resistance. Instead, many of the focus group members wanted Trump to prioritize domestic issues over international conflicts.
Overall, the focus group’s reactions highlighted a growing sentiment among Arizona swing voters that favors bold, unconventional leadership, particularly when it comes to executive action and cost-cutting measures. With many of these voters previously aligned with Biden’s 2020 campaign, their support for Trump’s current actions signals a deeper shift in the political landscape of swing states like Arizona, with implications that could reach far beyond the Copper State.
