The FBI secured two life sentences against convicted child predators in the same week for the first time in the history of an FBI field office, according to a report from The Daily Wire.
The two cases involved horrific crimes against children, including one predator who allegedly used an autism-focused nonprofit to gain access to vulnerable minors and another who ran a nationwide sextortion scheme targeting dozens of children.
FBI Director Kash Patel told The Daily Wire that the bureau has intensified its efforts against child exploitation crimes, saying agents have arrested roughly 2,900 alleged child abusers and identified or located nearly 7,000 children since last year.
One of the cases centered on James Bernard Grover, 63, of Deltona, Florida. A federal judge sentenced Grover to life in prison after a jury convicted him of coercing and enticing a minor to engage in sexual activity.
According to the Department of Justice (DOJ), Grover founded and led the Special Needs Advocacy Program, a nonprofit serving the special-needs community in Sanford, Florida. Prosecutors said he used that position to gain access to an autistic minor and coerce the child into sexual activity.
An FBI official told The Daily Wire that Grover primarily targeted young boys on the autism spectrum and used cruise ships in international waters to carry out some of the abuse. Investigators believe the scope of his crimes may extend back to 2010 and sought information from potential victims because of what officials described as the widespread nature of his victim pool.
The second case involved 20-year-old Orlando resident Montrey Roseberry, who also received a life sentence after being convicted of multiple child sex crimes.
Federal prosecutors said Roseberry posed as a woman online to manipulate children into sending sexually explicit photos and videos. He then allegedly used those images to blackmail victims into creating increasingly disturbing content.
According to the DOJ, Roseberry’s scheme involved more than 50 victims across the country. Prosecutors said he threatened to distribute victims’ images to family members and friends if they refused his demands. In some cases, an FBI official told The Daily Wire, he threatened children with death.
Patel praised the work of FBI Tampa and its law-enforcement partners, telling The Daily Wire that the back-to-back life sentences demonstrate the bureau’s commitment to pursuing child predators.
The two convictions mark the first known time an FBI field office has secured two life sentences against child predators in the same week, according to The Daily Wire.
