The study, led by Shi Zhengli—often dubbed “Batwoman” for her extensive research on bat-borne viruses—was recently published in Cell. Scientists found that HKU5-CoV-2 can bind to the human ACE2 receptor, the same entry point SARS-CoV-2 uses to infect human cells. While there is no evidence yet that the virus has infected humans, its ability to attach to human receptors suggests a possible risk of cross-species transmission.

This virus shares significant genetic similarities with SARS-CoV-2, the virus behind COVID-19, but is even more closely related to MERS-CoV—a coronavirus known for its high fatality rate of up to 35%. Laboratory tests confirm that HKU5-CoV-2 can invade human cells in a manner similar to SARS-CoV-2, signaling potential risks should the virus evolve further.
