Putin’s Promise—And Immediate Betrayal
Less than two hours after telling President Donald Trump he would halt attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a fresh wave of drone and missile strikes on power stations and even two hospitals across Ukraine. The strikes targeted Slovyansk and the Sumy region, plunging parts of Slovyansk into darkness and destroying homes near Kyiv.
Trump stated shortly before the attacks that Putin had “agreed to an immediate ceasefire on all (Ukrainian) Energy and Infrastructure” during their Tuesday phone call.
Reports indicate that the Russian Air Force executed a glide-bomb strike on a power station in the Donetsk region, triggering a blackout across several cities and towns. Meanwhile, dozens of drones swarmed Ukrainian infrastructure, striking multiple locations and escalating the conflict despite diplomatic overtures.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attacks, calling out the glaring contradiction between Putin’s words and actions. He urged international leaders to tighten economic and military pressure on Russia to prevent further escalations.

Trump’s Premature Praise
Unfortunately, Trump’s public praise of his “productive” call with Putin came at the exact moment Russian bombs and drones were already in the air.
At the time of Trump’s social media post, the full extent of the targets remained unclear.
Both Trump and Putin had emphasized in their discussion the need to address the root causes of the war and had agreed to technical negotiations on a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea. However, no binding commitments were made on a full cessation of hostilities.
Putin’s Snub: Delaying the Call for an Hour
Adding to the diplomatic insult, Putin kept Trump waiting for an hour past their scheduled meeting time, instead attending an unrelated event. The delay raised suspicions that Putin was leveraging the call for strategic advantage, possibly to gauge further concessions.

The New York Post has more on global reactions to the traumatic setback in what has already been a long road toward peace:
Boris Pistorius, Germany’s defense minister, accused Putin of “playing a game” after Ukraine first reported the strikes on civilians.
“Attacks on civilian infrastructure in the first night after this supposedly pivotal and great phone call have not abated,” Pistorius told German broadcaster ZDF. “Putin is playing a game here and I’m sure that the American president won’t be able to sit and watch for much longer.”
Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) also slammed the move, writing on X that Putin “insulted President Trump” by going back on his word.
“Putin’s forces targeted power systems in Slovyansk with guide bombs and attacks continue across Ukraine now,” he wrote.
“Putin does not want peace, he wants Ukraine.”
What’s Next?
Despite Trump’s optimism about reaching an agreement, Putin has not clearly committed to the truce, likely using the delay to extract further concessions.
For his part, Trump has signaled a willingness to recognize Crimea as Russian territory and negotiate other contentious issues. However, he has also warned of increased sanctions if progress is not achieved, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

My comment is really a question… How stupid is President Trump? Does he really think that talking with Putin is going to stop this war? At least Biden understood that increasing pressure on Russia, progressively releasing more and more powerful weapons would at some point convince Russia to stop their invasion. But Trump does not seem to understand that Putin’s Russia wants to control ALL of Ukraine. And they’re not going to stop. Putin is a liar and so are all of his surrogates. Until Mr. Trump understands that, understands that he is being played, this war and the devastation and pain that it is inflicting on Ukraine will simply continue and get worse.
Seemingly, Bolsheviks like Vladimir, aren’t to be completely trusted even as the ink on any executed agreement hasn’t completely dried but, with that being suggested, it’s rewarding that President Trump hasn’t tossed in the towel and continues on for the greater good.
Most of the Congress is ignorant about the history of the Russia/Ukraine conflict. There were certain Americans who helped fuel the war in Ukraine by advocating for the coup against a democratically-elected pro-Russian leader in 2014. Zelensky ultimately became president (a comedian, backed by an oligarch) and banned opposition parties, closed down opposition media and shut down the 2nd biggest church in Ukraine, deeming it pro-Russian. Kiev also started shelling Russian speakers in eastern Ukraine, giving Putin a justification for crossing the border. Greedy politicians sporting blue & yellow Ukraine pins and pocket handkerchiefs seem oblivious to these facts. Meanwhile, Ukraine became a Democrat money-laundering operation, with the infamous Burisma job for Hunter Biden, being just a small part of it. As Mitch McConnell admitted, most of the money allocated to Ukraine comes back here- enriching defense contractors who then give political donations to the same Congressmen backing the war. This disgusting warmongering (we can’t afford war- the U.S. Gov’t is broke!!) needs to end– we need to stop the senseless battlefield deaths of young Russian and Ukrainian men who ought to be back home, marrying and raising families. Give Trump and Marco Rubio space to negotiate a peace and to try to get a signed agreement. Russia has no motivation to sue for peace– they’re winning this war. Ukraine is desperately short of manpower. Zelensky is a dictator who needs to face reality and deal with the consequences of his poor judgement and leadership- his term of office has expired. The Russians could well demand his resignation- and call for elections in Ukraine– and a leader who has the legitimacy to conduct peace talks.
Putin only respects strength. Its time to hit him hard not just sanctions but military hardware that strikes at the homeland of Russia. The US should bolster forces in Poland and the EU should send in military personnel to bolster the Ukrainians. Putin is the old KGB liars and cheats he is not honorable he just talks a good game while he stabs in you back. President Trump you need to take immediate retaliatory strikes he simply used you. He only respects strength and the use of force. Make it decisive.
If the EU and mighty power Canada would put up their fair share of money, and help the USA shoulder the burden, putrid Putin could be put to the mat. And he should be. The man is a menace to the world.
I Am sorry President Trump, you try your best, but still get stabbed in the back. Putin’s promises don’t mean a hill of beans.
