A public disagreement has emerged between two prominent figures in the Republican Party after Donald Trump Jr. accused Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) of misrepresenting the details of the Trump administration’s newly announced memorandum of understanding with Iran.
The clash began after Cruz criticized the agreement during an interview with The Daily Wire on Wednesday, arguing that the deal, as publicly described, could provide billions of dollars to Iran before the regime makes meaningful concessions regarding its nuclear program.
“What has been released so far suggests that, unfortunately, the president is getting, I think, very poor advice when it comes to this deal,” Cruz said.
The Texas senator argued that allowing significant financial resources to flow to Tehran would strengthen a government he described as hostile to the United States.
“History teaches that giving billions of dollars to theocratic lunatics who want to murder us is a bad idea,” Cruz said. “Under the terms of what’s been released, somewhere between $10 billion and $30 billion will flow to the Ayatollah immediately before they make even a single nuclear concession.”
Cruz also raised concerns that the agreement could effectively formalize a continuing Iranian role in controlling the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy shipping route.
“It is difficult to see what possible benefit to America could come from that,” he said.
Cruz praised President Donald Trump’s decision to launch military operations against Iran earlier this year, arguing that the Iranian regime has spent decades supporting terrorism and targeting Americans.
“President Trump was exactly right to initiate military action against Iran,” Cruz said, adding that nearly 1,000 Americans have been killed by Iranian-backed actors over the past four decades.
The comments prompted an unusually sharp rebuke from Trump Jr., who accused Cruz of knowingly spreading false information about the agreement.
“The only problem with this quote is that @tedcruz is lying thru his teeth about the deal,” Trump Jr. wrote on X. “We’re not giving them a cent, and he knows that. Using fake news about the peace deal to undermine @realDonaldTrump is the opposite of MAGA.”
The exchange highlights emerging divisions among Republicans over the administration’s approach to Iran following months of military conflict in the region.
While many neoconservatives supported Trump’s military actions against Tehran, questions remain about the long-term strategy in the region and Iran’s military and nuclear capabilities.
The memorandum of understanding was announced late Wednesday night in Versailles, where administration officials said it would establish a framework for ending hostilities and reducing tensions following months of attacks.
Critics of the agreement, including Cruz, argue that any arrangement providing economic relief to Iran risks strengthening the regime and its regional proxies. Supporters contend the agreement does not involve direct U.S. payments and offers a pathway to de-escalation without further military intervention.
Neither Cruz nor the White House immediately responded to further public exchanges following Trump Jr.’s remarks.
