There is an old trick in argument, and it works by choosing the finish line before the race is run. You define victory as something your opponent was never trying to do, you note that he did not do it, and you call his failure to do it your triumph. This is the move at the heart of “Iran’s New Grand Strategy,” the Foreign Affairs essay published on June 3 by Narges Bajoghli and Vali Nasr. The authors observe that the Islamic Republic did not collapse under U.S. and Israeli bombardment, that no.

A growing trend among illegal migrants in the United States has emerged, where many are choosing to smuggle themselves out of the country to avoid the severe penalties of government deportations. This phenomenon is gaining traction as individuals seek ways to return home without facing consequences like long-term bans on reentry or prolonged detention in crowded facilities.

Alfredo Corchado, a seasoned journalist and executive editor at the Puente News Collaborative, recently shared his observations on this trend, highlighting the emergence of return packages, or “paquetes de retorno,” that allow migrants to bypass deportation processes. These packages offer routes back to their home countries or other destinations like Costa Rica.

Corchado explained, “[Coyotes] are now offering packages where [migrant] people can go back home …. [If] you want to go home, or you want to go back to Honduras, or maybe you don’t want to go back to Honduras because it’s too dangerous. [Or] you don’t want to go to Guatemala, but maybe you want to go to Costa Rica, and so they’re offering these [smuggling] packages where you can just go back home. Not all of them are taking it, I mean, many [are].”

Jeff Lamour, an American businessman in Alabama, shed light on how the self-deportation industry has become a lucrative business for smugglers, with prices reaching up to $10,000 per person for migrants trying to return home. Many migrants are turning to smugglers due to the pressures of losing their work permits or facing harsh treatment under current U.S. immigration policies.

Lamour said, “This [self-deporting] industry with the coyotes, it has become a multi-million dollar industry over here now. You got those guys that are going from Indiana, from Alabama, in those vans where they’re smuggling people to New Mexico, to border states.”

Lamour pointed out that many Haitians who came to the U.S. seeking better opportunities are now returning to places like Chile, where they lived before President Biden’s policies opened the U.S. border. Others are going into hiding to avoid detection, even going so far as to sell their cars to minimize any interactions with law enforcement.

“I sell cars for a living. I have my mechanic sitting next to me right there. He can tell you, as my witness — did we not have a guy come over here, return his car, because he’s scared to be deported? I had guys selling their car for $500 just so they won’t be deported. We see that every day.”

Cristian, a 29-year-old migrant from Venezuela, shared his experience of voluntarily requesting departure from the U.S. to avoid deportation. While he holds a work permit and an active asylum application, the increasingly hostile immigration enforcement climate has made him reconsider his stay in the country.

Advocates for increasing immigration, such as Andrea Flores of FWD.us, argue that higher levels of immigration are crucial for revitalizing small towns and meeting the demand for low-wage workers in industries like elder care and childcare. However, critics like Vice President JD Vance warn that the focus on cheap labor has hindered innovation, and driven down wages and job opportunities for citizens rather than fostering productivity improvements within the domestic workforce.
