‘Juneteenth’ – The Day A Great Republican President Freed The Slaves (In Texas?)

Arizona Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego is launching an effort to challenge a new Trump Administration immigration policy that could require many green card applicants to leave the United States and complete the process abroad.

According to a report from The Hill, Gallego is not only seeking to overturn the policy itself but is also pursuing a procedural strategy that could make it easier for Congress to reverse the change.

The dispute revolves around a recent U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) policy affecting how certain immigrants obtain lawful permanent residency.

While the Left wants to make the heretofore little-known date of June 19, 1865, a new holiday to bash America due to its partial history of slavery, Juneteenth (as it is now known) is not the date slavery ended in the United States.

Or the day the last slaves were freed.

Sorry, Mr. (Ill-informed) Science Guy holding a pocket Constitution he clearly has never read.

Juneteenth is actually only the day to celebrate a great Republican President’s historic message freeing the slaves finally reaching the Confederate State of Texas.

That great Republican President was, of course, Abraham Lincoln, and his historic message was the ‘Emancipation Proclamation’ of January 1, 1863.

As the nation approached its third year of bloody civil war, Lincoln’s proclamation declared “that all persons held as slaves” within the rebellious states “are, and henceforward shall be free.”

So, January 1, 1863, could be a great day to celebrate. But despite Lincoln’s’ message, the reality or ending slavery took a while longer.

So, what exactly is ‘Juneteenth’ about?

Well, this latest federal holiday, created last year when President Biden signed legislation that made June 19 a federal holiday in the wake of the Black Lives Matters’ (BLM) 2020 ‘summer of love’ and riots, marks the day residents of Galveston received General Orders No. 3, which freed slaves in Texas.

On June 19, 1865, about two months after the Confederate general Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox, Va., Gordon Granger, a Union general, arrived in Galveston, Texas, the last remaining Confederate state, to inform enslaved black Americans of their freedom and that the Civil War had ended.

That is the day slavery officially ended in the Confederate South.

However, that wasn’t the end of slavery in America. That didn’t come until a full six months later on December 6, 1865.

And that is another great day to celebrate.

That is the date the last American slaves in two remaining Union states (Kentucky which was nominally part of the Union and Biden’s home state of Delaware) were officially freed when the 13th Amendment was ratified and officially proclaimed.

That’s the real date slavery fully ended in America.

So, while Juneteenth has some significance for Texas and the Confederacy, it’s neither the day announcing the end of slavery by a great Republican President on January 1, 1863, nor the date slavery was finally ended in the entire United States on December 6, 1865.

It is the date Lincoln’s freeing of the slaves finally reached Texas though. The last Confederate state standing.

Are we going to have a white person holiday, an american indian holiday? Strange we need a black holiday.

      PatriotGirl

Well, we have two, actually, if you count MLK Day. And a whole month dedicated to teaching about Black history.

    Texas 1

About time somebody got it right. It is a Texas thing!

    Tom

I have declared August white everything month…in the name of equality, diversity and wokie-pokie.

      Dawn

Lol good one!!! Wokie pokie! I totally agree! I’m truly sick of people trying to make me feel bad simply because I’m white!

    john furlong

You’d think since the holiday has been celebrated so long, they would have figured out how to pronounce JUNE NINETEENTH

      agile1

Probably has something to do with ebonics…………..
That being said, I go the PO today (20June2022) and find it closed – WHY?!?!?! Then some lady comes in and says, it is juneteenth, which after reading the above states it has NOTHING to do with ANYTHING except for ONE city in Texas. Then also find out that Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, nor the end of the Civil War had ANYTHING to do with the final nail in the coffin of slavery in the US, but it was still going on in Kentucky and DELAWARE until 06December1865. And I bet one of the protestors in the delaware congress was most likely the present IOTWH – he’s about that old…………………

        George Thompson

If the South had won the Civil War, the slaves would have remained slaves until January 20, 2017. With great emancipators such as Obama, Mrs. Paul (hic) Pelosi, Billary, and the incumbent, they may enjoy the blessings of ankle shackles again and soon.

    Lori

I’m really sick of all the made up federal holidays- just another paid day (from taxpayer’s money!) for federal workers. Total nonsense.

    Walter Kappeler

But it was the next President who actually sent federal troops to Texas to free the slaves. Right?

    Gerry

Maybe it will mean more when a real adult puts a grown up name to the date instead of a 5 year old name. And then again — I doubt anyone around today was part of it and just trying to keep the division of the country thriving.

    BAMABADGER

First, Bill Nye is neither a scientist nor historian. Second, most Americans (including blacks) don’t know what the accurate justification is to celebrate Juneteenth day. I suspect a majority of Texans do. It was/is a Texas holiday and now an inaccurate national holiday. The dumbing down of America ncontinues.

Slavery hasn’t ended in the USA. In many prisons, most of them operated “for-profit” under contract to the state, prisoners are forced to work, producing goods for pittance wages. If they refuse to cooperate, their lives are made miserable. Privileges are taken away. In some cases, they go to solitary confinement. It’s still slavery!

Mr. Lincoln’s War Against the States didn’t end, hostilities, until the CSS Shenandoah, at sea in the Pacific Ocean, received word from a passing British ship in August, 1865, that the war was over. The Shenandoah had caught the entire New England whaling fleet at work in the Bering Sea in June and destroyed it without firing a shot. All of the ships but two were burned with their cargos, leaving the remaining two to return the whaling crews to American shores. There were no casualties on either side.

Many of these comments are embarrassingly churlish. I’m a conservative and I wouldn;t want to be associated with these commenters. Are the posters really for slavery and racism? Because they sound like they are. “Juneteenth” is a black english colloquialism, like rednecks saying “ain’t” and Cajuns calling a poirboire a poboy. America normally rejoices in its americanization of language. We should be ashamed half our country perpetuated slavery, realists about it being the only way to keep the union together for 90 years, and rejoice that our country fought to end slavery. Considering black people built the slaveholding south and didn’t get to keep what they earned, while the arrogant plantation class let it burn to the ground around them instead of facing the inevitable and negotiating peace, I’d say black people in America deserve a paid holiday.

      Dennis Harris

We all deserve the facts. The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by the Commander in Chief of the United States to his Federal troops. It was exclusionary in that Lincoln excluded the slave States of Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland and Delaware from its jurisdiction. Additionally, the document excluded Confederate areas where the Union Army was already in control through Marshall Law. The hypocrisy of it was astounding – Lincoln attempted to “free” slaves in areas his government did not control and chose not to free slaves in areas where his government was in control! The document was thought to be un-constitutional at the time and also through out history. It is defended by crawling it back into a “military” order – not a civil document. The Union general in Texas was simply carrying out his military orders on June ? 1865. Constitutionally, slavery did not end in America until December 1865 when the 13th Amendment passed in Congress by a small number of States who remained in the Union. Technically, slavery existed in the remaining States until those States ratified the Constitution in order to re-enter the Union. The practice of indentured servants continued until about 1895. Facts are cumbersome. Woke politicians are worse.

    DC

Not to be a stickler for the facts, but in 1865 a DEMOCRAT was president. President Johnson was sworn in upon the assassination of President Lincoln.

    AL

Many black media types keeping linking George Floyd to the holiday. They praise him as some kind of saintly role model figure. Really?

    Sunshine Kid

The Democrats STILL want slavery. Economic, that is.

    wboehmer

“Juneteenth” is an ambiguous term that a toddler might use.
It no more represents June Nineteenth than it does June Eighteenth, June Seventeenth, June Sixteenth, June Fifteenth, June Fourteenth or June Thirteenth.
If such shorthand was a good way to memorialize a specific date, we would refer to Independence Day as Julyth.

    Debra S.

Perhaps someone should go back and actually learn our history. It was the black people who enslaved the black people. Just as many white people were enslaved and for longer. Check your history everyone.

      Theresa Ann Hunter

It is true that black people hunted down those of their own race to sell. The trip from their camp to the ships was horrible and over 50% of them died. These people were sold to England, Spain and France. When England deemed slavery illegal alot of the Nigerian people were becoming destitute and needed another outlet for their product…hello North America. The first person to owns slaves was a black man. One of the richest men in the South before the war was a black man who owned over 100 slaves to run his sugar cane plantation. Not only was he a slave owner he was also a slave breeder. This is from a book called Dixie’s Dark Secret.

      Gus Richards

Now why on earth would the libs want to check facts and the truth? Those things don’t fit their agenda. Also, then the blacks wouldn’t be able to use that old race card or keep crying about how bad they have it. All they really need is a little effort to get an education, which is available to those that want it, and then join the working class of this country.

    Stephen Russell

Merge June Teenth with July 4th to make=
    Declare White Supremacy Month

    jason george

Anybody notice Lincoln didn’t free the slaves in the north or neutral states or anywhere he actually had jurisdiction. I’m not for slavery but how does the President have any jurisdiction to free any slaves?

      HEART of TEXAS

Because no one, especially congress will push back on the executive orders which are a usurpation of legislative powers.

      Just sayin

Let Texas have their holiday and call it whatever they want but Nationally, leave it alone, it has no place. Celebrate Dec.6 for the final freedom day if you wish, Only get it right.

    Gary

Juneteenth is a great holiday! It gives black Americans a chance to celebrate their freedom from the Democrat slave holders and it gives Republicans a chance to honor their ancestors who gave their lives to free the slaves from the Democrats! It’s a win win!

      George Thompson

All Americans should celebrate OUR Freedom every day. No holiday aimed at just one group of Americans should be tolerated. The incumbent who claimed he would unite the country has exploited every fissure in its unity, and he is making these cracks as potholed as he can (see Gary above) Always remember: United we stand; divided we fall.

    Lucas Cade

On June 1, 2021, Biden visited Tulsa to mark the 100th Anniversary of the Black Wall Street Massacre, and it was decided that a holiday would be made with no specific date in June and to name it “June Teenth Day”. That way it was far enough away from Memorial Day weekend as not to interfere with that holiday. The reason behind the new holiday is the following:

The Tulsa race massacre took place on May 31 and June 1, 1921, when mobs of white residents, some of whom had been deputized and given weapons by city officials, attacked black residents and destroyed homes and businesses of the Greenwood District in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Known as the Tulsa race riot or the Black Wall Street massacre, the event is considered one of “the single worst incidents of racial violence in American history”, and is believed to be one of the deadliest domestic terrorist attacks in the history of the United States. The attackers burned and destroyed more than 35 square blocks of the neighborhood – at the time one of the wealthiest black communities in the United States, known as “Black Wall Street”.

More than 800 people were admitted to hospitals, and as many as 6,000 black residents of Tulsa were interned in large facilities, many of them for several days. The Oklahoma Bureau of Vital Statistics officially recorded 36 dead. A 2001 state commission examination of events was able to confirm 39 dead, 26 black and 13 white, based on contemporary autopsy reports, death certificates, and other records. The commission gave several estimates ranging from 75 to 300 dead.

A new name needs to be affixed to that holiday if we are to keep it, and to give it the significance it is due. My belief it will only cause more racial divide and a mockery of the event because very few understand it from its name, June Teenth, and the fact it came in the wake of BLM burning down their own black neighborhoods and businesses in protest. Martin Luther King Day has been made a mockery of by BLM.

We as a country honored 9/11’s Jihadist terrorist attack, although three former presidents and a current one, Clinton, Bush, Obama and Biden, along with members of Congress, Omar and the Squad, have made a mockery of it in recent years. The Oklahoma federal building domestic attack has been for the most part swept under the rug after the wake of 9/11.

We have Confederate families still honoring their war dead. At the same time we celebrate President’s Day the vehemence against many of our presidents has been exposed. Thanksgiving has become an argument over the treatment of our Indigenous population. The left hates the Constitution, but love having the 4th of July off to celebrate a country they are destroying.

What really constitutes a national holiday, the vast amount of non-government workers never get the day off. They work harder than ever in retail sales for government workers and bank employees to take advantage of sales. Basically national holidays are commercial ventures where vast amounts of money normally not spent on a regular work day are spent by government workers and bank employees, and the private retail sector workers are grossly overworked.
