President Biden publicly addressed the ongoing college protests against Israel for the first time on Thursday. Although he stated that violent protests are not protected, he did not order the National Guard to remove the entrenched demonstrators.
During his speech at the White House, Biden emphasized that the United States is not a nation that silences dissent or operates under authoritarian rule.
“But neither are we a lawless country,” he said. “We're a civil society and order must prevail.”
Biden framed the on-campus chaos as a “moment for clarity.” He stressed that individuals have the right to express their opinions but dissent should not led to violence.
