Scott Pelley Slammed as ‘Unhinged’ After Anti-Trump Wake Forest Commencement Speech

There is an old trick in argument, and it works by choosing the finish line before the race is run. You define victory as something your opponent was never trying to do, you note that he did not do it, and you call his failure to do it your triumph. This is the move at the heart of “Iran’s New Grand Strategy,” the Foreign Affairs essay published on June 3 by Narges Bajoghli and Vali Nasr. The authors observe that the Islamic Republic did not collapse under U.S. and Israeli bombardment, that no.

Veteran 60 Minutes anchor Scott Pelley is facing a wave of backlash after delivering a politically charged commencement address at Wake Forest University, which critics described as a fear-laced, anti-Trump tirade that hijacked what was meant to be a celebratory occasion.

Pelley, speaking to the graduating class of 2025 on May 19, warned that the United States is in a state of “peril” and that “insidious fear” is creeping into schools, businesses, homes — and even people’s private thoughts.

“Your country needs you — the country that has given you so much is calling you, the class of 2025, your country needs you and it needs you today,” Pelley declared with theatrical flair.

He went on to claim that journalism, freedom of speech, and even the rule of law are “under attack,” evoking imagery that many listeners saw as both apocalyptic and overtly political.

“Ignorance works for power,” he warned. “Power can change the definition of the words we used to describe reality. This is an old playbook, my friends.”

Critics Call Speech “Unhinged,” Hypocritical

Pelley’s address, delivered in the style of a moral sermon, drew only scattered applause at the event — but far louder criticism online. Detractors labeled the CBS correspondent’s remarks as inappropriate for a graduation and laced with partisan fearmongering.

“Scott Pelley raged at Trump in angry, unhinged commencement address at Wake Forest… as he speaks openly and freely in America,” one user wrote on X.

Another user slammed Pelley as “a self-important, sermonizing propagandist,” accusing him of using a non-political platform to push an overtly ideological message.

Conservative commentator Juanita Broaddrick — who accused former President Bill Clinton of sexual assault — added fuel to the fire, branding Pelley “a pompous POS” in a viral post.

CBS Lawsuit Adds to Accusations of Hypocrisy

Several critics were quick to highlight the irony of Pelley lamenting the erosion of free speech and press integrity, while his own network, CBS, faces a $20 billion lawsuit filed by Donald Trump. The lawsuit accuses 60 Minutes of editing an interview with Kamala Harris to protect her presidential bid, raising questions about the very journalistic ethics Pelley claimed were under attack.

“Did Scott Pelley mention that 60 Minutes edited Kamala’s campaign interview, and they helped her answer questions ???” one user asked sarcastically. “Until he does that, his credibility is ZERO.”

Mediation efforts in the lawsuit began earlier this month, with the dispute centering on whether CBS deliberately manipulated footage to benefit the now-failed Harris campaign.

A Call to Action or a Partisan Pulpit?

While Pelley positioned his speech as a patriotic call to action, urging graduates to stand up against fear and censorship, many saw the remarks as yet another example of legacy media figures conflating personal political beliefs with journalistic duty. The setting — a college graduation — made the speech’s tone all the more jarring for many attendees and viewers alike.

As America’s political divisions deepen, moments once reserved for unity and inspiration — like commencements — increasingly serve as battlegrounds for ideological messaging. In this case, what was intended to mark the beginning of students’ futures became, for many, a reminder of the nation’s fraying trust in its institutions — including its most prominent news outlets.

In a striking contrast to Scott Pelley’s commencement address at Wake Forest University, President Donald Trump’s recent speech at West Point showcased a markedly different tone and reception. While Pelley delivered a fervent warning about the erosion of American institutions and the rise of “insidious fear,” Trump focused on themes of unity, patriotism, and military strength. He emphasized the importance of upholding the nation’s core values and the role of the military in safeguarding them. Demonstrators gathered outside the venue, dissenting his policies and rhetoric. Despite the protests, the atmosphere within the ceremony was lively and enthusiastic while remaining respectful, with cadets and attendees engaging in the event’s traditional proceedings.

He has a severe case of TDS and it’s taken over his pea-sized brain. CBS really needs to rid of him. Their ratings are in the tank.

Lest anyone think the MSM is even close to fair, honest, or balanced. In fact, they are America’s single greatest enemy.

WTF kind of college would have a partisan half wit like Pelley give a commencement speech. It is supposed to be about their future and the world they are entering as adults. Not the petty grievances of partisan hack.
