Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent acknowledged Wednesday that he threatened to “kick ass” during a heated confrontation last year, while firmly denying reports that he threatened to punch the now-acting Director of National Intelligence “in the face.”

The unusual exchange emerged during a Senate Finance Committee hearing, where Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) pressed Bessent about reports surrounding a confrontation between the two Trump administration officials during the summer of 2025.

According to Bessent, one key detail in the widely circulated account was inaccurate.

Former MSNBC host Joy Reid is blaming her ouster on race and Donald Trump “anxiety,” even as MSNBC, along with other major liberal media outlets, continues to slash jobs and rework programming amid a sharp ratings decline and shifting public trust.

In a recent conversation with Katie Couric, posted on Couric’s Substack and YouTube channel, Reid speculated that her identity as a black woman was a key reason for her show’s cancellation earlier this year — despite mounting evidence that MSNBC, like many cable networks, is undergoing a broader overhaul in response to falling viewership and changing media consumption habits.

“Only in one way was I different,” she said, “I’m a Black woman doing the thing,” Reid said, comparing herself to other white liberal hosts like Nicolle Wallace and Rachel Maddow. “There is a difference for Trump in hearing the kinds of criticisms specifically out of a Black woman… it bothers him in a way it doesn’t bother him like anything else.”

Trump’s combative history with the press spans race, gender, and political affiliation, and includes a long list of critics — from white male anchors to fellow Republicans — whom he has attacked with equal or greater ferocity. To suggest that her commentary carried some unique weight simply because of her identity ignores the broader reality: Trump lashes out at virtually anyone who opposes him, and there’s little evidence to support the idea that he viewed Reid as especially threatening. Her framing feels more like a self-serving narrative than a grounded analysis of the media’s relationship with Trump.

Reid also pointed to the supposed discomfort of MSNBC and other networks over tough Trump coverage as another reason for her departure, claiming that “there’s a push for people to, ‘Hey, do less Trump. Do more entertainment.’”

But Reid’s explanation appears to avoid any meaningful self-reflection about her own role in the show’s performance — or the broader industry trends affecting numerous hosts across ideological lines. Her program, The ReidOut, saw a steep drop in viewership after the 2024 election, shedding nearly half its audience and averaging just 759,000 viewers, down from 1.4 million.

While Reid maintains that her ratings were holding up relatively well compared to other MSNBC shows, her claim that race was the driving factor behind her dismissal seems to ignore the basic realities of media economics — and the fact that many liberal anchors, regardless of race, are being sidelined.

What she did offer, however, was a narrative that fits neatly into the same identity-focused framework that characterized much of her on-air commentary. “I tried to constantly unpack the racial history of the country,” Reid told Couric, framing her departure as part of a backlash against the kind of political discourse she championed.

Her replacement, The WeekNight, a panel-style program featuring Symone Sanders-Townsend, Alicia Menendez, and Michael Steele, has thus far failed to attract a significant audience so far.

As the media landscape continues to evolve, Reid’s attempt to pin her departure on identity politics rather than performance or changing audience demands raises more questions than it answers — and serves as a revealing glimpse into the mindset that has left many legacy media figures increasingly out of step with the public they once commanded.

I’m exhausted with people using the “b;ack card” when life doesn’t go their way.
It’s a huge turn off to me since it is actually racist in itself. I imagine that racial discrimination is alive in some places but with me it’s not and I know many successful Arican/American friends and colleagues who are positive, community spirited people.
If Ms Reid is unhappy at being replaced then please have her provide evidence, and not play the black card.

Of course she does, you know you already lost as soon as you bring race into it.

She’s a Crazy woman with a foul mouth, who happens to be black. And her ratings stink.

Stuff the RACE CARD – that has lost its “status.” You were FIRED because you were very HIGHLY PAID for doing NOTHING more than TRASING WHITE people , and that has gotten REALLY OLD and JADED. .

I think the HIRING was based on being a black woman. Strictly a diversity hire. They were just righting a wrong.
