The family of Karmelo Anthony, the Texas teenager indicted for first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf at a track meet, is under growing scrutiny after court records revealed he has been granted indigent status—despite raising over $538,000 through an online fundraiser.
Anthony’s family had launched a GiveSendGo campaign shortly after his arrest, which quickly amassed hundreds of thousands of dollars from supporters. But this week, investigative journalist Sarah Fields reported that Anthony has requested — and been approved for — a court-appointed attorney on the grounds that he cannot afford private legal representation.
Critics and supporters alike have questioned how someone with access to over half a million dollars in donations could qualify as financially destitute. The family has since updated the fundraiser, claiming the money is earmarked for a wide range of expenses, including relocation, counseling, transportation, legal counsel, and private investigative support. They are now asking for a total of $1.4 million to cover what they describe as an increasingly complex and costly legal and personal ordeal.
Attorney Mike Howard, currently representing Anthony, is believed to charge a retainer of up to $30,000 and an hourly rate of $400–$500, according to Fields.
Earlier this week, Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis announced that a grand jury had indicted Anthony for the first-degree murder of Austin Metcalf, following a deadly altercation earlier this year at a high school track meet. While the family insists the stabbing was in self-defense, prosecutors say there is sufficient evidence to pursue a murder conviction.
The indictment has only intensified a polarizing national conversation around violence, self-defense, and racial dynamics in the justice system. Meanwhile, the family’s claim of financial hardship—despite their massive crowdfunding success—has added a new layer of controversy to an already high-profile case.
