Legendary R&B and disco icon Gloria Gaynor, best known for her anthem of empowerment “I Will Survive,” is facing backlash from left-wing activists and media outlets over her political donations to Republican candidates—just months before she is set to receive one of the nation’s highest cultural awards.
Gaynor, 81, was recently named as one of the recipients of the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors, which will be presented in December at a ceremony that will include remarks by President Donald Trump. The announcement, meant to celebrate Gaynor’s decades-long contribution to American music, has instead become subject to today’s hyper-politicized culture wars.
Targeted for Supporting Conservatives
The controversy erupted after MeidasTouch, a progressive media group, published a report highlighting Gaynor’s political contributions over the years. Using her legal name, Gloria Fowles, the singer reportedly donated approximately $22,000 to various Republican candidates and organizations since 2023.
Among the recipients of Gaynor’s donations are Senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, House Speaker Mike Johnson, the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), and the New Journey PAC, a political action committee focused on promoting black conservative voices.
The report further criticized Gaynor for an earlier donation to Dr. Ben Carson during his 2016 presidential bid and accused her of being complicit in what the outlet calls Trump’s “attacks against the fabric of the country.”
“As the December ceremony approaches, Gaynor has a choice to make,” MeidasTouch wrote. “Will she take a stand against Trump or allow him to use her fame to fuel his agenda?”
A Private Citizen Under Fire
Gaynor has not publicly endorsed Trump, nor has she donated to his campaign or affiliated organizations, according to public records. She has also consistently maintained that she prefers not to mix politics with her musical career, telling interviewers in the past that she strives to uplift and inspire rather than divide.
Despite this, critics are labeling her a hypocrite for avoiding public declarations of her politics while privately supporting Republican candidates. Others have gone so far as to demand that Gaynor refuse the Kennedy Center honor as a protest against the Trump administration.
Supporters Push Back
Conservatives and free speech advocates have rushed to Gaynor’s defense, calling the criticism a clear example of political intolerance and an attempt to “cancel” a cultural icon over her personal choices.
“Gloria Gaynor isn’t using her platform to push any political agenda,” said one supporter on social media. “She’s being punished for quietly donating to candidates she supports. That’s her right as an American.”
Others pointed out the irony of attempting to shame a woman who became a global symbol of resilience and survival for daring to think independently.
A Broader Culture Clash
The clash over Gaynor’s honor reflects deeper cultural and political divisions in the U.S., especially as more celebrities and artists find themselves scrutinized for their personal affiliations rather than their professional accomplishments.
President Trump’s decision to personally participate in the Kennedy Center ceremonies has also added fuel to the fire, with critics accusing him of politicizing the arts — a charge Trump allies say is ironic given the coordinated outrage being directed at an 81-year-old music legend for her private donations.
Moving Forward
As of now, Gloria Gaynor has not responded publicly to the criticism, and there is no indication that she intends to reject the Kennedy Center honor. Supporters hope she will stand firm, attend the ceremony, and be celebrated for the music and legacy that have inspired generations.
