President Donald Trump announced Thursday that Charlie Kirk, the conservative youth activist and founder of Turning Point USA, will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously, following his assassination during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University earlier this week.
Kirk, 31, was shot and killed on September 10 while addressing students at the university. The shooting, which occurred in the middle of a Q&A session, has sent shockwaves through the political world and reignited national conversations about political violence and public safety.
“A Champion of Liberty”
Speaking from the Pentagon during a memorial event marking the anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks, President Trump opened with a solemn tribute to his close friend and political ally.
“Before we begin, let me express the horror and grief of so many Americans at the heinous assassination of Charlie Kirk,” Trump said. “Charlie was a giant of his generation, a champion of liberty, and an inspiration to millions and millions of people.”
“I have no doubt that Charlie’s voice, and the courage he put into the hearts of countless people — especially young people — will live on,” he added.
The President confirmed that he would posthumously award Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States. The announcement drew praise from conservative figures and emotional reactions from Turning Point USA members and supporters across the country.
The Assassination
The tragic shooting took place during an outdoor student event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. According to eyewitnesses, Kirk was answering a question about religion when a single gunshot rang out.
Kirk was immediately rushed offstage by security and later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Authorities say the shot came from approximately 200 yards away, fired from a rooftop adjacent to the venue.
Ongoing Investigation
As of Thursday morning, the shooter remains at large. At a press conference, law enforcement officials revealed that the gunman arrived on campus around 11:50 a.m., climbed to a rooftop using a stairwell, fired a single round before fleeing into a nearby wooded neighborhood, and left behind a firearm, which has been recovered.
Two individuals initially detained were later released by the FBI, and authorities say they are analyzing video footage of the suspect but have opted not to release it publicly yet.
The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security have classified the shooting as a “political assassination.” Investigators are reportedly exploring online threats Kirk received in the weeks leading up to the attack.
A Nation Reacts
A makeshift memorial has been established on campus, with students and supporters leaving flowers, candles, and American flags near the spot where Kirk was killed.
Kirk had risen to national prominence in his early 20s as the founder of Turning Point USA, a youth-focused conservative organization that gained influence under Trump’s first administration. He was known for his outspoken views on college campuses, religion, free speech, and immigration.
At the time of his death, Kirk was actively campaigning with Trump allies and was rumored to be planning a run for public office.
“Our prayers are with his wonderful wife Erika and his beautiful children,” Trump said. “Fantastic people they are. We miss him greatly.”
Presidential Medal of Freedom Ceremony
The White House has not yet announced a formal date for the award ceremony, but aides say it will likely occur within the next few weeks and will include Kirk’s family and members of the conservative movement he helped galvanize.
