With Tyler Robinson now facing seven felony charges in the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, questions have mounted over whether the 22-year-old suspected gunman had ties to Antifa, the loosely organised movement of far-left activists.

President Donald Trump, while speaking on the assassination, had said he would “100 percent” consider designating Antifa as a terrorist organization. Speaking in the Oval Office last week, Trump called the group “terrible” and vowed to dismantle what he described as the “radical Left” and “the organizations that fund and support political violence.” His senior adviser Stephen Miller amplified that message, saying the administration aimed to “destroy … a vast domestic terror movement.”

The investigation into Robinson’s motives has brought renewed attention to Antifa.

What Is Antifa?

Antifa is not a formal organisation but a loose collection of activists organised into autonomous local cells. Followers describe themselves as militant opponents of fascism and have been visible at protests across the country in recent years, including the violent “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville in 2017.

Its followers say they aim to stop what they view as racist, homophobic or authoritarian movements from gaining a platform. “The argument is that militant anti-fascism is inherently self-defense because of the historically documented violence that fascists pose, especially to marginalized people,” Mark Bray, a Rutgers University historian and author of Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook, had told The New York Times.

While many activists focus on community organising and non-violent protest, some argue that force is justified if far-right groups are allowed to mobilize freely. Antifa is also known for “doxing” political opponents and spreading information through online networks, sometimes fueling misinformation in the process

The Movement’s Roots

The term “antifa,” derived from German opposition to Nazism, was first used in 1946, according to Merriam-Webster. In the United States, one of the earliest groups to adopt the name was Rose City Antifa, founded in Portland, Oregon, in 2007. The movement grew more prominent after Trump’s election in 2016, with clashes erupting at Berkeley and later in Charlottesville.

Is Tyler Robinson Associated with Antifa?

Robinson was arrested on Friday in Utah after the fatal shooting of Kirk during a student event. The FBI reported that shell casings from a weapon linked to the crime were inscribed with anti-fascist slogans, including “Hey fascist! Catch!” and “Bella Ciao,” a Second World War Italian resistance song later adopted by anti-fascist activists.

Investigators have not publicly concluded that Robinson was a member of Antifa, but Trump suggested the suspect had been “radicalized on the internet” and “went bad very quickly.”

Court filings also suggest Robinson had personal motivations. He was reportedly in a relationship with a transgender roommate and left a note indicating he intended to “take Kirk out.”
