Federal officials say they are treating Wednesday morning’s shooting at a Dallas ICE field office as a targeted attack, citing evidence that suggests political motivation.
Around 6:40 a.m. local time, a gunman opened fire from a nearby building, hitting multiple detainees. Two detainees were killed and one critically injured. The shooter later took his own life. No ICE personnel were injured.
The FBI confirmed that at least one unspent shell casing found at the scene had “ANTI-ICE” written on it. FBI Director Kash Patel said the casing, along with other evidence, points toward a deliberate act of anti-government violence aimed at federal immigration enforcement. At a press briefing, FBI Special Agent R. Joseph Rothrock described the attack as “anti-ICE in nature” and said investigators are focused on understanding the shooter’s ideology and motive.
“It is unfortunately just the most recent example of targeted violence,” Rothrock said.
Speaking to reporters, the facility director publicly urged the left to tone down its rhetoric against ICE agents.

The very same ICE facility was hit with a bomb threat in August, leading to a man’s arrest.
A total of four people were shot and two are deceased, including the shooter. The gunman reportedly shot the victims while they were inside a transport van, though this was not confirmed by police.
Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson (R) urged “restraint” and “calm” in theorizing about the shooter’s motives while the investigation is ongoing.
“We are a country and a city that needs prayer,” Johnson said.
Federal, state, and local agencies continue to investigate. No further details about the shooter’s identity or background have been released as of this report.
